Thanks, this is the first time I've ever used System Restore and I have to say it just works. Who says Vista sucks?

Thank you MiB, your guide is excellent. My Precision M4400 runs much smoother now with ACHI enabled.

    Great thread.

Well, the software disk encryption we are using only works in ATA mode, and all the Windows XP Dell E6400+6500's we bought came configured as IRRT. Swapping from IRRT to ATA causes the BSOD 7b error.:(

Can anyone confirm than a change from IRRT to ATA would even be possible?

    Hi there ,

I'm trying to switch my Dell Precision M4400 from IRRT to AHCI, to help combat the massive latency issues. (...Having tried all other web based advice on the latency of this system)

I am no longer using the DELL factor install of Vista Ultimate 32, I have re-installed Vista Ultimate 32 and removed the DELL recovery partition.

I've read most of this thread and followed the Tutorial : How to switch from IRRT to AHCI mode. This gives rise to the BSOD (see pic) in both AHCI and ATA modes :(

Can anyone out there help me with this?

    Fingers Crossed

It's an excellent suggestion; however, installing the Intel Matrix Storage Manager 8.8 will likely give you much reduced latency.

Sounds intriguing. Where might I find the Intel Matrix Storage Manager 8.8. The latest drivers for my system listed on the dell support site are the 8.7.0.1007, A05 (and the same file listed as A04)...but keep talking, I'm listening...

    ;)

You can get it here. And from my experience, they reduce the latency immensely (from 10000 microsseconds to around 200 in my case, although it still has very rarely some spikes around 1000).
