Well that has definitely helped, average latency is quite a bit lower. Thanks very much HerrKaputt. However I wouldn't go as far as to say it had solved the problem. I'm still getting spikes up 30000 mu/s every 10 secs or so.

    Any further recommendations?

    Cheers

I have noticed that disabling the media bay (= DVD drive) and eSATA port helps. You can do that in the BIOS, press F12 while the Dell logo is showing.

the most annoying thing about disabling the dvd drive that doesnt happen to any other things that ive disabled is that it pops up under safely remove hardware whenever you restart or wakeup from sleep/hibernate.

Same here - followed step-by-step and got BSOD again... snowboardpunk, did you resolve this yet? Or does anyone else have any ideas?

    EDIT:
Additional info -- I did a clean install of Vista 32-bit and didn't install any kind of HDD drivers or anything. Do I need something installed first before this procedure will work?

MiB, thank you for your detailed description. I've had shutdown and sleep problems with my E6400 ever since I bought it last year. Now it's working. I've posted a link to your solution on the Euro Dell forum. Your hard work will help a lot of people. Very grateful.
    regards

so can someone clarify if IRRT raid 1 means that it is supposed to create an image of the hdd on the laptop, or does it mean that it supports an indipendent external raid setup.

Darn. I tried it several times, however, it always boots in a bluescreen when I switch to AHCI. I followed sharp the tutorial...
    E6400 Vista 32bit...
I'd like to get rid of video hicups. Audio is working pretty good since 8.8.

    Hello MIB,

this great instuction works for Windows XP 32 bit as well :). I hope to fix some issues with this change. At the moment there is an Intel Matrix Storage Driver in Version 8.8.0.1009 published at Dell Support.

Has anyone here problems with "freezing" systems when undocking and docking back after a cuple of minutes back to the E-Port Advanced docking bay?

Has anyone else than me (we've got 160 Latitude E6400/E6500 in our Company) problems with the wlan interface "Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN"? My customers complain that the device deactivates from time to time, writing events 4201 and 4202 in to the system event log.

Has anyone else here problems with the PLDS DVD+-RW DU-8A2S (Firmware 4D12) drive? My customer complain that this device play "ding dong" and "dong ding" because the device is deactivating and activating in the device manager. I think it is a problem of the enegy management generated by the intel chipset.

    Regards

    Hi MiB,

Thanks for this post - you have saved life -- not only is my Vista x86 Dell E6500 much snappier, the DVD burning function now works for the first time with all my software (UltraIso, Alcohol 120%, Nero 7). Also, my Huawei E220 USB HSDPA modem now works for the first time.

One mod. to your tutorial: after following your instructions to the 'T', I still had the dreaded BSOD on startup. So I booted up in IRRT mode, installed the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (V8.8) first, then shutdown, booted up in AHCI mode, and lo-&-behold, everything worked as you said...

BTW, while I did not have the Intel Matrix drivers installed, I also installed Vista SP2 -- this did not work either...

    System: Dell E6500, 4GB RAM, DVD[= PLSD DVD+-RW DU-8A2S], Display[= NVidia Quadro NVS 160M (256MB)], HD[= Hitachi HTS723225L9A362 240 GB], Windows Vista X86 SP2.

Question for you and others: Has anyone done this for Windows 7 RC1???

    Thanks, Willem
