in case you did not see, the M4400 with FX1700 is out.

Dell priced it insanely at $499.00

I was unhappy with the grainy LG-Philips display that I got and Dell couldn't guarantee that they could send a replacement Samsung. Plus, the keyboard had too much flex for me. Maybe a different rep would've agreed to send out the Samsung for sure, but I didn't want to have to deal with all that - I'm a college senior dealing with 6 classes and grad school applications. Besides, after paying a premium for a workstation-class notebook, I don't expect to face quality-control issues.

    Thanks.

Any comments on the fan noise level. Heat? Was it cool enough to have on your lap?

The machine was pretty quiet. The only time it got noticeably warm was when I ran 3DMark06 - the vent on the left was expelling a good deal of hot air during the benchmark. As long as you don't plan on running GPU/CPU intensive tasks with the laptop on your lap, you'll be fine. But don't take my word for it - others have owned and used the laptop for more than a day and they must know better!

I use mine on my lap most of the time, its maybe a little worse heat wise than most of the other notebooks I've had,the fan intake vent is in a real pain of a place though and makes it awkward to position it without blocking the vent.....I have a dell "coolslice" coming that should remedy this problem and will hopefully help drop temps a bit.

Fan on max speed is quite loud, and that is pretty much where it is if you play games, occasionally running at the next lowest speed which is acceptable noise wise [depends on the ambient temp]....running solidworks or cosmosworks, haven't heard the fan go any higher than low speed which is quiet......normal office, web browsing etc,the fan seldom comes on at all unless powermizer is disabled.

Extreme/Quadcore plus FX 1700m with a combined extra 35W over mine to get rid of,will be more of a test for the cooling system.

I decided to revive this thread with some very useful information rather than starting a new one to ask the same basic question....

The Precision M4400 has the 512mb nVIDIA Quadro FX 770M standard. The 770M specs (Shaders, Shader Speed, Core Speed, Memory Speed, Memory Bus, Process (both 65nm)) are identical to the nVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT.

Information on the Quadro FX 1700M has been much more elusive. It seems that the 1700M is closely related to the GeForce 9700M GT, correct? If so, the price of $499 seems greatly disproportionate to the performance increase it offers.

I would appreciate it if any of you guys could confirm the information on the 1700M!

Also, I saw mention in one of the posts of someone running 3DMark06 on a Precision M4400 (with 770M, I think). Would you mind sharing the results of that test (and any other benchmarks you ran)? It'd be great information to have. FYI- The only 3DMark06 results I've seen so far show the 770M with a 4% performance advantage over the 9600M GT- 5,297-3DMarks (770M) vs. 5,095-3DMarks (9600M GT).

    Thanks!

there is also this nice review M477hew did on his FX 1700M
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=315874

Stock clocks for FX 770M are 500/800/1250 compared to 625/800/2500 for the 1700....there is probably some voltage difference also as my FX 770m will not let you overclock to 2500 shader.
