By all the stats on nVidia's website, the 770M and 1700M are identical. Should I wait for the 1700M? Most likely the 1700M will be a higher clocked version, as it consumes more power. How much extra cost compared to the 770M can I expect? Any suggestions?

I've just had a check on the 570M (8600M GT) and 1600M (8700M GT), which are comparable to 770M (9600M GT) and 1700M (9700M GT) at release. It seems that based on the current 9600M GT and 9700M GT, the clock speeds are 500MHz vs. 625 MHz, an increase of 25%. This would be an approximately 25-30% higher 3DMark score. Estimated extra cost: $AU150-$200. This amount is based off the HP Compaq 8510W and 8710W, with the same configuration, different graphics chip, however one is 15" and the other is 17", so it could equate to something lower. This price is also in $AU, so it will probably be lower in the US. Maybe Dell sales rep knows the price of them already? I haven't tried ringing them yet.

I don't know where to go to talk to sales reps in the small/medium buss. sections? And the Home ones don't know anything about these laptops...
and that $150-200 is pretty high on what I've found to compare to
On Alienwares site (Which Dell owns) on there 15in Lappy it was $150 to go from the 8600m gt to the 8700m gt, But on Dells site (Which is pretty much all cheaper) It always cost from $50-100 for GPU upgrade... Depending on the GPU's
    I'm hoping it'll be $50 or 70... But it shouldn't go over $100
Any clues on when in September these will be released?

I think you'll have to keep checking the M4400 pages to see when they'll show up. Just remember that the FX 1700M, being clocked higher, will also produce more heat and eat up battery life even quicker. Hopefully Dell's cooling system is good enough to handle the 1700M well.

yea I know... But since I'll be using Linux most of the time (xp just for gaming and Vista for software I can't get on Linux) I was plaining on downclocking the gpu while in Linux...
Does anybody know if it'll be the 1st few weeks at least?

I'd be more comfortable with the $150-200 estimation, simply because FX vs Geforce isn't really on the same pricing scheme. Quadro will always be the more expensive. Yes, there is some element of overclockability on the 770M compared to the 1700M. I don't think you would want to overclock a 1700M much, and temperature wise, it may end up the same after overclocking since the 1700M is on 50W and a higher clock compared to 35W on the 770M. But I am doubtful whether you can overclock a whole 25%. 10% maybe, but you would need some serious cooling for 25%.

    On the M4400 spec sheet:
NVIDIA Quadro® FX 1700M is expected to be available in Sep/Oct 2008. Date is estimate only and is subject to delays.

I think I am going to cancel my order on my M4400 and wait on the FX 1700M. The only hitch on this time frame is the availability of Windows XP, which will cease on September 30th, according to the Dell website. Why couldn't they extend it until January next year which is the last month they are allowed to offer it? Grr!

Wonder if Dell allows preordering of parts, even if subjected to delays?

Good point that quardro's are more pricey but my understanding is that thats for certification on programs and stuff...
So that would have already been paid for in the base price of the 770m? so it should only go up for hardware prices... Which should be similar to geforce...?

and Oct? If it's not 1st half september I'm easily not waiting
Is this Dell waiting for nvidia to release the 1700m? Or is it already out? (I'm guessing it's not since I can't find much on it, But I can't find much on the 770 ethere)
I can't decide to wait of not... I think I'm just gonna get the Lappy since I probably won't be able to get it at that price anyways

And If I'm not waiting I think I get to order on the 29th! :)
on a quick side question how long from time of order will it take to get my Lappy? Like a month, more, (PLEASE GOD) less?

That number can fluctuate wildly depending on demand and availability of parts. Often, a certain part is in short supply and all orders that depend upon it get delayed. Check the Dell Shipping subforum to get an idea of shipping delays and such.
