It could be that the cpu is indeed faulty. Are you able to test the cpu somewhere else?

I don't have possibility to check if the cpu is dead or not. I sent it back to seller and waiting for a replacement.

Is the fire pro 7820m from the m6500 the most powerful GPU able to work in the m6400 or will other cards from the m6500 work? Sorry if this has been asked before. I plan on upgrading the laptop and want to squeeze the most power out of this system all I can, now that the m7820 is $100 on average.

Again, I'm sorry if this has been asked I've been researching the last couple of days and came up short of an answer.

The Quadro 5000M was the "most powerful" card available on the M6500 (albeit for a short time), but the few hits I found for it were $400 (out of stock e-tailer) - $700 (ebay). The FirePro M7820 is only slightly less powerful but is rated to use only 50 watts compared with the 5000M's 100 watts. It was a big upgrade from the 3700M I originally had in here, and don't at all regret paying the $250 for it 2 years ago.

On the other hand, $700 will get you a used Precision M6600, which if you're lucky has the added bonus of a FirePro M6100 (Dell replaced many a failed M8900 with this current-gen card). I'm coming home to such a beast in a few days :D

Nice Bro, A beast of a laptop to say the least! I was drooling over them while shopping. i7's MXM III slot =) future upgrade able. Out of my price range though =( I picked up my m6400 with the 2700m for $175 Shipped! I already have an extra 7400rpm HDD to raid 0, 4gb to make 8 and I could get a Q9000 for $50 plus a m7820 for another $100.

    Thanks for your reply!

That's a great deal for the M6400 that you got! Lucky you! :D

Just go for the M7820, you will not be disappointed and your M6400 will still remain cool to the touch.

Those sellers on fleabay are just being greedy. Most of them are looking at a minimum of $500 for the Quadro 5000M, which is a ripoff.

Might as well invest those money to get a M6600!

Perhaps some of the M4700/M4800 GPUs would work on the M6400, too (as they are MXM 3.0a IIRC)? Like e.g. the M5100 which should be 50% stronger than M7820 in games at least.

Did you mean the K5100m? That is MXM 3b IIRC - I believe the K1100m and K2100m are MXM3a.
