I replaced the matrix. CCFL by RGB LED.
    But it was not Covet.
    Bought this matrix: http://www.ebay.com/itm/271006044568?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
    Bought this LCD Cable: http://www.pchub.com/uph/laptop/361-48113-14030/Dell-Precision-M6400-Covet-LCD-Cable-17-.html

    Remove: CCFL matrix, cable, inverter.
Put: RGB matrix, corresponding cable (P/N G748F).

All work took about an hour. All docked perfectly.
    No problems with brightness control.
    Video card: fx2700m.

    Best Regards,
    Alex.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE REPLY.

I actually ended up buying the RGB LED screen. I will see how that plays out. High brightness is something that I can use.

So I guess for the 1200p screens, the screen covers are all the same, for CCFL or RGB LED. I can only assume that the covet ones are the same as silver ones. Just different paint. (Lower cost I guess)

I will try this and see how it goes. Thank you again!

Also, anyone here know if the Quadro FX 3800M for the M6500 works on the M6400?

It should work - one user some pages back did try it, but it didn't work (but he suspects his card was defective as he had the same problem some M6500 users are reporting with the card). FX3800M is basically just an overclocked FX3700M, so it's not that much better. AMD M7820 would be a better choice, but it's getting hard to find one for a decent price.

My keyboard's backlit light is no longer working. I have the correct setting in the bios and control point, but it's as if its just failed out.

Any idea on how I can try to get the light back? This is frustrating...

    Thanks guys,

I followed DGDXGDG's lead and upgraded to the M7820 - mine came with the heatsink/fan assembly. It does work, with these caveats:

    1. No DELL boot logo - all you see is a blinking cursor until POST is complete. BIOS functions work otherwise.
    2. BIOS reports M7820 as "Unknown video card".
    3. Reboot causes POST to hang. No-go.
    4. S3 resume is okay. It caused BSOD on older Catalyst releases, fixed as of v12.8

Core temps are <70 under load. I OC'ed to 810/1150 for a P2637 score on 3dmark11 (not stable for gaming). I settled for 770/1100.

Thanks for the reply. Does anyone here know if the smaller battery slice for the M6700 works on the M6400? I am not talking about the large ones out there for the M4400 or M4500, but the new smaller designed ones for the 17inch systems.

I tried booting my M6400 without the primary battery and with the slice that I use for the M4400. It does not work. But that slice is completely different. Would love to see if anyone tried!

    There's a slice option for M6700? I don't think there's a slice option for M6600, so I presumed the same holds for the M6700.

So did anyone actually try with the Nvidia Quadro 3800M?
