Question to those of us who run Linux or a BSD natively (or as their main OS) on their M4600: can you guys manually set the fans speed through lm_sensors or pwmconfig ?

I run a dozen Linux VMs on my Win 7 host, so I may as well ditch Seven and fully go to Linux if it can grant me full control over my machine, and solve the fan problem...

    Hello,
I just ordered a Samsung 830 128GB SSD to replace my main HDD.
My BIOS HDD setting is RAID 0 right now, and I know I should be in AHCI. When should I change this, and how should I change this if I plan on duplicating my current drive?

Question: I was looking for rock-hard specs on the m4600's IPS display gamut, and I have read that HP uses the same exact panel in the 8560w, but I also found this post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/hp-...tebook-8560w-owners-lounge-5.html#post7594193

I verified on dell's page, which is linked, that they say only 70% of sRGB is covered...

Is there any definitive testing that's been done to either panel by a third party, or data that is definitely correct?

I ordered my M4600 with the Samsung 256 as the main SDD. The BIOS setting came set for Raid mode - a little research showed that the Raid setting is AHCI. I also found that I could switch back and forth in the BIOS without any impact. Side note - I then ordered a Runcore 120 (mSATA 6GB) SSD and installed it. After cloning over the Samsung partitions (including the Dell recovery partition) this became the boot drive with the OS and programs and the data was moved to the Samsung. I did need to re-align the Runcore but this can be done "live". All said and done - fast boots, fast program launches and fast data read/writes. I also had a WD Black 750Gb 7200RPM 2.5 drive from my old laptop. I mounted it in cheap USB3 enclosure, encrypted it completely with TrueCrypt and now have a very fast external drive for additional storage. Benchmarks show this external drive running faster than it was internally in my old laptop (although benchmarking with encryption has limitations). The hardware AES on the motherboard helps a lot with this.

It is not clear that they use the same panel.

And like you, I have not found good specifications for the gamut either. I have asked if anyone who has calibrated their display could post the data, but I didn't see a response.

While that page may give some post-sales satisfaction to folk who bought HP :) the info on Dell's page is clearly incorrect.

    It says

Leaving aside for the moment that these are 2d, area measures on the cie xy diagram (so not very accurate) they are contradictory. AdobeRGB has the same chromaticities for red and blue as sRGB, but a different more saturated green. Therefore, if a display has 100% AdobeRGB coverage then it must also have 100% sRGB coverage.

The "100%" figures also seem suspiciously precise and more like marketing speak to me.

I find it hard to believe that none of the people on this forum who own either the HP or Dell wide-gamut laptops have calibrated their display (with calibration hardware, like a colorimeter or spectrophotometer). Looking at the ICC profiles would give objective, measured data for the two systems.

This is the message I just sent to Dell via their feedback form. I have no idea if they actually read these, or will act on them, but i tried to present a business case so hopefully they might listen.

If anyone here has a more direct connection to Dell and could bring this to their attention, that would be great.

And the Dell webmaster has replied to me (probably an automated message but still)

    Yay!

I have seriously been considering this or a Lenovo W520. I can use the power, but recently got a chance to see a Lenovo and the laptop AND power supply are huge. From what I read, the Dell must be similar.

So, is there anything as close to being as powerful (i7, good graphics card, great screen) in maybe a 14" size? Anything at all I should consider? Lenovo 420 series does not look particularly attractive featurewise. Also, must dock to a full featured docking station.

Appreciate any suggestions for me to check out.
