what's the name of the 180w adaptor used with m4600 ?

and, the 240w of the m6600 works fine if used with m4600 on docking station ?

    Hi everyone, first post here.

My company has decided to do away with my workstation and laptop and provide me with the Dell M4600.
My concern is that I use 3D studio Max and Adobe Premiere a lot and already suffer with performance issues on my Dell precision T3400 workstation. I get the feeling the people who test these systems draw a couple of lines in a CAD program and call it worthy.
Does anyone here use 3D Studio Max and/or Premiere Pro on their M4600 for fairly intense modeling and rendering jobs? How does it preform?

Here are the specs they gave me:(they also said that it will not come with the Solid State hard drive as shown, but will have at least 320 GB)

Base Unit: Dell Mobile Precision M4600 (225-0382)

Processor: Intel Core i7-2820M Quad Core 2.30GHz 8MB, Dell Mobile Precision M4600/M6600 (317-6075)

Memory: 16.0GB, DDR3-1333 SDRAM, 4 DIMM for Mobile Precision (317-2660)

Keyboard: Documentation (English/French), Dell Latitude E-Family/Mobile Precision (331-2169)

Video Card: NVIDIA Quadro 2000M with 2GB GDDR3, Dell Mobile Precision M4600 (320-1914)

Hard Drive: 128GB Dell Mobility Solid State 3 Drive, Dell Mobile Precision (342-2363)

Hard Drive Controller: No Fingerprint Reader and No Contactless Smartcard Reader, Dell Precision M4600 (331-1391)

Floppy Disk Drive: 15.6 Full HD (1920x1080)Wide View AG LED w/Prem Panel Guarantee,Dell Mobile Precision M4600 (320-1972)

    CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Drive: 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, Dell Mobile Precision (318-0354)

Sound Card: Dell Webcam Central Software Dell Latitude/Mobile Precision (421-1201)

Sound Card: Integrated webcam with single digital microphone, HD/Full HD, Dell Mobile Precision M4600 (318-0345)

Processor Cable: Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300, Dell Mobile Precision (430-4017)

Factory Installed Software: All Hard Drives Non-RAID, Dell Mobile Precision (342-2435)

Feature 9-cell (97Wh) Primary Battery, Dell Mobile Precision (312-1174)

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Hi, Chuck,

the specs you gave us seam to be good. It has the most powerful Graphics card available for this laptop built into it and a good processor. I guess your company is ordering a refurbished one? Otherwise order the 2860 instead of the 2820 i7-Processor as it has more performance for the same price.

I do work with 3ds Max design...and it works fine so far, but i don't have very extensive projects. I do a lot of spline modelling which i think is not as resource intensive as poligon modelling. Anyway...i put it to the test:

I created a normal 68x68x68 Cube with one segment each dimension, converted it into a editable poly (sorry, I use the german version, I can't give you the appropriate terms) and applied MeshSmooth 7 times. You should then have a Polygon-structure with 98304 Polygons. If you then change into the "element" selection mode, select it and then try to drag it around you have reached the point where it gets laggy. But you can still duplicate it several times and then rotate around your elements with the ViewCube with no lag. Rendering with iRay (utilizing all the 198 CUDA-Cores of the Quadro 2000M) is sometimes quicker than mentalRay (only utilizing CPU) and sometimes slower...but I have not got around why yet.

    Hopefully I explained well...

    Hi folks,

Time for me to replace and upgrade my laptop and the M4600 seems like my likely choice. I notice there is a good sale on these today at Dell. Do these often go on sale? Is this deal too good to pass on for now?

Also, any great tips for configuration? I am thinking middle of the road, but if a tick up on processor speed or going to the higher Nvidia card produces a substantial improvement, I will consider it.

I'll go configure and pop back to see if anyone would order differently.

    Appreciate any advice.

    Thanks.

    ~Bob

@rebop - I thought IPS was only available with Quardo 2000M. Well, perhaps it changed from the time I was buying it.

It seems to accept this configuration, but does complain the camera is not compatible but does not allow me to delete it. Odd.

What do you think about the price? Likely not to be seen again or does this go on sale often?

@rebop: I cannot say much about US prices. My computer is from Outlet - Previously Ordered New. It has pretty similar configuration to yours. Without camera and fingerprint reader though (thanks god for that :) ); DVD is only reader, i7-2820QM, Quadro 2000M, 8 GB RAM, 250 GB disk, IPS display.
It had cost about 7500 zł, which is about 2200$ now (although after taxes); back in October/November it was 2300-2350$ (zł has fallen down lately).

Sounds like a sweet machine!! Would love to see some screen shots -- of the IPS screen! I've been away for some months; are there any good screen shots of the M4600 IPS screen?? Would love to see some.
