So I am trying to upgrade to a quad core. my machine shipped with a duo core.

I contacted the tech support and they are saying that there are two types of motherboards. And that my motherboard might not take the quad core processor.

Has anyone upgraded their duo core (shipped with) into the quad core (aftermarket)?? I also need to know if all 4 dimms of ram would be supported.

    Thanks

Hey do you think you could take some pictures when you put the quad-core in just to document the process. I am thinking about putting new arctic silver thermal on my CPU and GPU. I'd like to see what it looks like in there before I dive in.

See the attachmented screen shots ... on idle 800 MHz multiplier x8 and on some load (1080p Video in window) >3.0 GHz and multiplier x32. A05 BIOS and working AMD power management is also visible. Both screen shots are from "balanced" power mode.

Unless its dependent on your warranty with dell..I talked to Dell Chat on my M6600 CPU Swap:

09/24/2011 01:35:31PM Agent (TMPw_Timothy_231879): "yes you can upgrade to this Intel "sandy Bridge Processor" 2.5GHz, I7-2920XM is the Quad Core Processor for you system."
09/24/2011 01:35:52PM Agent (TMPw_Timothy_231879): "and it will work in you system board."
09/24/2011 01:37:20PM RXWatcher: "Do you just swap the CPU and you're good? No bios swap?"
    09/24/2011 01:37:35PM Agent (TMPw_Timothy_231879): "correct."
09/24/2011 01:37:48PM RXWatcher: "great! thank you!"
09/24/2011 01:38:26PM Agent (TMPw_Timothy_231879): "Is there anything else I can assist you with today, RXWatcher?. If there is not then I would like to ask if you are satisfied with the level of support you received today."
09/24/2011 01:39:20PM RXWatcher: "I'm good..thank yo for your assistance. Unfortunately I cant purchase that cPU from Dell. Its too expensive :) You've been very helpful."
09/24/2011 01:41:15PM RXWatcher: "Oh, would installing that CPU myself void my warranty?"
09/24/2011 01:42:29PM Agent (TMPw_Timothy_231879): "you would have to keep the original processor incase there is a issue with the system since we would not cover a third party processor."
09/24/2011 01:42:53PM Agent (TMPw_Timothy_231879): "In the short answer no but keep the original safe."
    09/24/2011 01:42:59PM RXWatcher: "Thank you!"
    09/24/2011 01:44:21PM RXWatcher: "Have a good day!"

Thanks for the screenshots. I guess there is indeed some problem with A05 and just the quad core CPUs then (or maybe it's a combination of the i7 quad core and the nvidia graphics).

I have the nvidia graphics and I have been able to get the HDMI audio working properly. At first I thought it was not functional but it turned out the hotel TV I was connecting to didn't support HDMI audio. I tried on my receiver at home and it came right up. I'm using the latest drivers from nVidia directly.

Thank you. At least I now know that it works with nVidia and the motherboard with the connector routing should be capable of it.

Does someone know how to get HDMI audio to work with the AMD FirePro M5950? I'm using the latest drivers from Dell.
