I'm thinking about getting this laptop and putting a 250 GB SATA drive in the second bay, and dual-booting 7 on the main drive and XP on the second drive. Has anyone done this? Do you guys think there would be any problems?

My M4500 shipping date has been delayed twice now, supposedly they are out of i7-820's, and RAM. No commit date, which is scarier... they are hoping by the EOM? If I want a slower proc and ram, they can deliver sooner. yech.

Someone else will surely correct me if I'm wrong but...

The m4500 doesn't really have 2 full size drive bays. It has one full size (2.5") drive bay where you can put in a SATA drive. If you want another drive you have to order it with the 64 gig mini card SSD that they offer on the website. According to dell when you try and configure the 64 gig card has to be the primary.

Or optionally, you can get the adapter that allows you to install a drive where the DVD drive goes (of course losing the DVD drive in the process).

I agree, but what's the problem here? Just take the stickers off. I do that with every laptop I get.

Works fine on the M4400 with newmodeus caddy or the cheap ebay ones without the locking latch, the M4500 uses the same drive bay parts going by the fact a E6510 owner is using the same module, F8 at bios, choose which drive/OS you want to boot to.

I managed to get it working in linux so it isn't compatibility issue, just bad dell drivers issue :)

FYI, Windows 7 has a optional XP mode that allows you to run old apps that are only compatible with XP. I have one old app that requires XP, but I use VMware in the work I do, so I just run the app in a XP virtual machine there.
