hey thank, that looks pretty good then for 16 GB.

Regarding the port multiplier question it looks like the answer is negative according to the post below (not M4500 specific, but seems to confirm my fear) If a multi-disk eSATA device doesn't have a port-multiplier built-in, only one device will be visible, on (nearly?) all laptops with the Intel chipset. Apparently the Intel Chipset should support port-multiplier on the hardware-level, but needs IRRT support and Intel doesn't provide that (yet?). An add-in card is a solution, but that's not a road I'm willing to take...

For anybody who might be interested: I upgraded my M4500 (with a quadcore Core i7 QM740) to 16GB last week without problems. So despite any information like in the Intel processor specs that might suggest the contrary, it just works and if you have trouble it must be a problem with the RAM or BIOS or whatever. Not even running the latest BIOS myself.

I was searching the internet and found lots of people asking about it, but yours is the first I found that verifies that it works - thanks for posting! I have the M4500 too (with a quadcore i7 QM840) and would like to upgrade to 16GB, but I've read other peoples' stories of buying 16GB and having it fail to boot up. Can you post the memory vendor / model that you purchased - I might as well play it safe and stick to the same type.

    Thank you in advance.

Not gonna run benchmarks... I chose the cheapest modules anyway. Days are long gone that I bother about those kind of performance differences :D

    The type I ordered was

    Kingston KVR1333D3S9/8G
    8GB module PC3-10600 CL9 204

Btw, because I have an 120 GB SSD with an even smaller system partition, I set up a boot.ini parameter /MAXMEM to limit the memory to 8GB during "normal" work (smaller hibernation file?), and an option for the "full" 16GB when I plan to do some more extensive virtualization. Ran into a weird problem there that msconfig seems to only report/recognize modulo 8GB. Sometimes it at least recognized (nut not reported) the correct amount, sometimes not, and in ALL cases some internal Win7 routines considered any value between 8 and 9 GB effectively available memory as being LESS than 1GB, and disabled AERO for that reason, lol. So I had to set /MAXMEM to about 9300 MB to avoid that (9300MB-8192MB> 1GB)

I also wonder if setting /MAXMEM influences performance... Like if you take 9GB, does it split addressing of the first 4,5GB and the last 4,5GB between the two SODIMMs, or is any access below 8GB restricted to single-channel memory access? Hmm...

Hopefully this will clarify the 16GB ram / processor compatibility, since the information seems to be pretty scattered on the web. 16GB will work with quad-core processors only. It doesn't matter that the quad core says it only supports 8GB.

    I had an i7-620m, dual core. I purchased this Crucial 16GB kit: Amazon.com: Crucial 16GB Kit (8GBx2) DDR3 1333 MT/s (PC3-10600) CL9 SODIMM 204-Pin 1.35V/1.5V Notebook Memory Modules CT2KIT102464BF1339: Computers & Accessories
I installed it, and the system wouldn't start. It would post, say "Starting Windows," then white screen.

I then purchased a used i7-740qm for cheap on eBay. With it installed, the Crucial 16GB works just fine, is recognized in windows as 16GB, My memory WEI has gone up to 7.7, from 6.something with 8GB.

I need to replaced my motherboard in my M4500 which has the 1800M nVidia chipset. Does anyone know which motherboard part number is the one with the 1800M and not the 880M I search this thread and didn't come up with anything and I searched Google and didn't get a precise answer. There seem to be 2 different part number (at least from Ebay Auction).

I don't think dell support w8 for m4500. Might just stick with w7.
