Good luck and start hoarding 16:10 displays now as it appears that most manufacturers are trying to unify their panels to the 16:9 standard.....

I'm guessing you don't do 3d CAD or renderings. They'll eat as much CPU as you can throw at them.

I'm in the media industry so design, publishing is what I need on the run hence the ratio and density. Yes indeed the 15.4" are rare, might have to switch to apple macbook pro 17" to get this resolution as they appear to be the lightest more portable of the 17"s.

What I cannot understand is why 16:9? Who made this decision? It does't make sense on Tablets, Laptops or desktops, we are bound by paper measurements and 16:9 is just too stretched out, it reduces depth in games and reduces real estate for serious work. Its a shame you have to buy a 10lbs laptop to get it, at least Apple are not swaying away on iPad, desktops and 17" laptop, they have sense which is why they are now so successful.

I want to vote to go back to 16:10, how do we do that?
Edit: I have set up a poll!

16:9 is the current HD TV standard, that's where it comes from. Wide screen viewing is what the consumer wants as a result we get stuck with less vertical real-estate on our systems.

I, for one, am not limited to working on paper sizes, some of my work goes right to PC based presentations, some get stuck in a window on a drawing sheet some place in all sorts of odd sizes ARCH A, B, C, D, E1, ANSI A... blah blah...

I don't know how you could see 2 A4 dos on a 15.4 panel in any case.

Sure, Apple makes a nice product. If you can use it and can afford it then go for it. I haven't drank the Apple koolade, I'll stick with my PC based solutions for now, they work better for me.

Hey, anyone know what is the normal temp range for an i7 740 QM FX 880M?

During idling mine cycles from 51-75 sometimes hits 80 for a tick, fan comes on drops to 50 after a real long time and then when it turns off, jumps to 75 again real quick again. This is at normal dell power setting. At ultra performance it does the cycling between 60 and 75.

I just dont like how the fan is on almost all the time now at 2.6k RPM It hardly EVER turns off like it used to. I've updated the bios and cleaned out the inside.

Should I let a dell tech come and replace the heatsink and fan? Or will that mess things up more since this is pretty normal? I've had it for about 7 months now, started doing this for the last couple months. After I opened it to replace the ram to 8GB it got worse this last few weeks.

Will it help if I wipe down the copper parts of the heatsink with a hardly damp microfiber napkin or something?

If the system is just sitting there at idle and the fan is running full speed I would call tech support... mine was doing that and it turned out that when they replaced the MB they forgot to put the TIM pads on the video chipset.

Ok now received a brand new Dell M4400, WUXGA, T9600 2.8GHZ

What a machine, high end dual core still kicks!

My thoughts... the screen is much higher density than I imagined, I am used to WUXGA on 17 but whoa this is compact. Whilst I love the laptop, there is something curiously different about the screen, perhaps I am used to glossy screens, this is very matt, so much so you can see the slight speckly look of the matt.

This resolution at such density is quite hard on the eyes I must admit. Will have to see if a 17" is better option or I will get used to it. I have a 1080p i7 720QM M4500 being delivered tomorrow so will see which is more practical.

I like WUXGA on a 17", but prefer WSXGA on 15", the points moot, neither is available on anything new except Mac now.
The crappy screen quality bothers me more than anything on my 16:9 1600x900 M4500

The fan is not at full speed, at 2.6K while the max is +3K. Hmm, yea i dont want them messing up and having stuff go missing. By the way, would anyone recommend getting thermal paste? I dont want to void my warranty though if they come to replace my heatsink or anything that requires it to be moved and then find it stuck. is it stuck like glue? or just pull off and put back on?

What are TIM pads btw? The little metallic looking sponges below? Can I put on my own?

I'm with you on the extra vertical space. As a developer it always came in handy and I wish Dell would still do 1920*1200 in a 15" form factor. It's even quote hard to by 24" displays with 1920*1200 as opposed to the usual "full hd" crap.
