    Yes.

Windows does compress RAM before saving to disk, That is how computers can get away with a smaller hiberfil.sys. But this is like playing Russian Roulette; hiberfil.sys should be the same size as physical RAM.

    That might address your symptoms.

Give me a minute to find and post a link.

You can try the procedure below on Win 7 to disable hibernation, delete the hiberfil.sys file and then re-enable hibernation and recreate the hiberfil.sys file. The parameters on the enable command will create a hiberfil.sys file 100% the size of physical RAM.

The process requires local admin privileges and uses the powercfg.exe command-line utility can be used to disable hibernation and remove the hiberfil.sys.

    1. Close all apps, then shutdown, then restart. Do not open any apps throughout the procedure.

    2. Audit (study) your power schemes (plans), make note of which schemes utilize sleep/hibernation and the time delays. This info used in step #9.

    3. Open an elevated command prompt.

    4. Review command help:
    powercfg.exe /?

    5. Disable hibernation:
    powercfg.exe -Hibernate OFF

    6. Shutdown, restart. After a restart, the hiberfil.sys file will be removed (i.e. automagically deleted by the system).

    7. Open an elevated command prompt.

    8. Restore the hibernation function:

    powercfg.exe -Hibernate -Size 100

Executing this command will re-create the hiberfil.sys file. Sufficient CONTIGUOUS space must exist on the operating system partition.

    9. After re-enabling hibernation using powercfg, it is usually necessary to then use the control panel Power Options applet to re-enable sleep and hibernation for each and every power scheme (as needed).

    10. Shutdown, then restart.

    Retest the display resolution issue.

Are you using a docking station with external monitor between closing and opening the lid?

I want to be able to connect a Dell Precision M4500 laptop to 2 external monitors. Thus, I'd be able to use 3 monitors including the laptop monitor. How can I make this happen? What kind of KVM switch or cables do I need to make this work?

I never used a docking station. I did, however, test my DP to HDMI cable on my 1080p TV and the TV's screen resolution defaulted to 1366x768. I did this only once, about a month ago. This is the only time that I've dealt with an external or second monitor.

You will need the Dell E-port plus dock, the regular e-port only supports one display. The e-port plus will do two, either DVI, display port, or VGA.

The unit from Dell will come with a second power adapter so if you want to save money and use your primary power adapter you can buy just the dock used. I got mine at Dell Laptop and Desktop Computers and Replacement Parts

I got the Dell E-Port dock as well and like Neal I got mine from a source other than Dell. I got mine here: Amazon.com: NIB Dell E-Port Plus Replicator PR02X + 130W AC Adapter: Electronics for $120 with a power supply. It was sold as new, I have no reason to believe otherwise, it was certainly in pristine condition either way. I've been very happy with it for the price...

After doing everything mentioned above, I had to wait again for a time when my computer would go into hibernation. Upon resuming, I am still having the same issue with all my open application windows resizing. It is almost as if upon hibernation, the graphics driver changes resolution to 1024x768 and all my open windows conform to that resolution. My desktop resolution is 1920x1080, so with many open windows shrinking down like that, it gets very frustrating to have to manually size them up again.

I searched online for any other instance of the problem and it seems that many kept suggesting to upgrade the graphics drivers. I upgraded to the 258.96 nvidia drivers, but still get the same issue. I will post screenshots soon to visualize the problem for those who don't understand.
