Thanks SoulFry for that effort of debugging....i am sure i lack that much patience to do the same...lol.

hhmm, it would interesting to see if Vista has the same issues or not, as most developers are targeting their hardware to be vista oriented as XP is gonna be phased out in the near future.

As a potential buyer of this machine, i would too like the machine to perform this basic function smoothly for the price we gotta pay.

EDIT: BTW like hp 8530p which conforms to certain tests carried out in the military standards stated, does DELL m4400 live up to the quality if not beat it?

it's a mistake that the RGBLED screen of M4400 is called "Truelife".
My order stats: "Display : 15.4in Widescreen WUXGA (1920X1200) Antiglare with RGB LED".

But could be Dell perhaps is offering two different RGBLEDs for the M4400 - the Danish Dell Rep told me this RGBLED was the only one for the M4400.

    :)

I see.. interesting! In my case i am more than happy with getting a matte screen.

My M4400 has been in production for 10 days.. Dell tells me they need some parts to finish it - might be the RGBLED display.. i just have to wait i guess - 1. dec is my delivery date according to my order status (which has not changed since I ordered it).

I'm actually a computer science researcher -- music is just my hobby, which is why I was annoyed I couldn't kick back and have fun with the new lappie :) But you're right, the sound quality off the internal audio is horrible. But the driver conflict was affecting the music production software (and, it seems, my external audio interface), so debugging the problem off the internal audio was the first step to getting everything else running smoothly. Turning off the eSATA seems to make the external audio interface and all of my music software run well now (in XP, at least), which is good. (I just ran a 5 hour continuous test of Pro Tools, which was not able to play simple tracks without throwing an error when eSATA was on. With the eSATA off, it ran non-stop for 5 hours, and it uses an external USB audio interface, not internal audio.)

I'd be curious to hear if this fix helped others, too, if only to understand how widespread this problem is.

Some folks asked whether this worked for Vista, too. I'll check it out and post results later.

    Hey soulfry.

What kind of Audio Interface are you using? Did you check for known incompatibility probs between that and the Ricoh chipset? There's quite a lot of known probs with it. I should have an issue aswell 'cause i'm using the e-mu 1616m card but so far it's been runnin fine. And be sure to disable the onboard audio when having the external hooked up. Otherwise you'll always have issues
