Maybe someone has some useful input on this, I'd sure appreciate it...

I bought an INTEL 520 240GB SSD, that I expected to soup up my Precision M4400. I had some strange problems installing W7x64 on it (Clean install, but cannot get past accept license terms page... - Windows 7 Forums) and eventually it turned out that I had to install from the original Dell DVD that came with the laptop.

But still, the performance I get is not what I expected. The SSD is supposed to be capable to give me around 270 MB/s on 3GB/s SATA, but I measure (HD Tune) less than half of that, 120 MB/s on average.

I've upgraded to BIOS A27, I've installed the latest chipset drivers from Dell. I've done all the things I think are necessary, but still the performance disappoints me. And it's not only what I measure, it just doesn't feel as much improvement as I notice on my colleagues (non-Dell) laptops with SSDs.

    Any input is welcome...

Yes, I should have mentioned... everything is properly aligned, W7 manages that by default, and I've checked it. Good point, though, thanks. Will check the other thread...

EDIT: Ah! Doing the Intelppm registry tweak (and only that one) improved SSD performance by 60%! Yes... from 136 MB/s average to 218 MB/s, as measured by HD Tune. Quite some improvement. Thanks a lot.

Can you point me to information on that specific registry tweak? Thanks!

Edit: Nevermind... They were right there in front of me. Thanks!

    Just for the record,

Using the E-Advanced Dock Replicator and two display-port cables my M4400 (FX1700M) is able to drive two Dell U2711 @2560x1440 each, really a lot of pixels :-D

    Regards

Has anyone attempted to install a 1.8" drive in the wpan/wwan pcie bus? It has the sata contollers. I plan to keep my optical and put the microdrive in pcmcia bay, the pcmcia port needs to come out to make room. I don't use the PC/EC slots. Both the right size 50/54mm. Always need more drives, RAID and SSD. I have a pci-e to sata adapter and a sata data/power-m to microsata-f cable. Will it work? What's the VCC of the pci-e? 5? The microdrive uses 3.3v. Also isn't the pcmcia bus faster? 3.0 G? could I use that? :spinny:

Hmmm...looks like this party is about over?

Too bad, because I'm the proud owner of a "brand new refurbished" Dell M4400. :)

Yes, Dell is still selling them. And people like me are buying them. The thread may have died, but it's been a great resource for me, learning about my "new" lappy. :) Thanks y'all!

Easiest way to cram in another drive, and not lose the DVD drive, is to use something like the Wintec Filemate Express Card SSD.

It's not cheap, but it's simple and fast.
