Precision 7730 will cancel the E-Port DOCK interface

In China's taobao.com, the price is about RMB 200（$30）, but it is not guaranteed that it has not been used at all.

 

Dell could solve the dual power supply issue by designing TB + Power Pass Through for docking to the TB Dock.

HP 230W G2 TB dock uses such a method and doesn't require a 2nd brick for it's big 17" Zbook (see photo below). Dell could learn from HP in that area. I'd suggest if Dell went that way they also retain the befier power plug they currently have (two power connections, one for pass through as pictured, and one on back just like they have now). That way we could still use our existing power bricks when not docked.

 

This design is similar to the Side DOCK design of ThinkPad, which is connected by Thunderbolt 3.

 

Both are superior than the TB16. It is just too stupid to use 2 power bricks for >100W laptop. The Lenovo one seems interesting. The price is also slightly cheaper than Precision at my place with similar spec. Not sure if the GPU is easily upgradable like Precision and their heat dissipation.

Anyway, both Lenovo and HP are having very poor sale option at my place. Only Dell offers spec customization.

 

Personally, I think: Precision is a cooling and GPU upgrade. It is the best among the three mobile workstations DELL, HP, and ThinkPad.

 

My understanding of this is, heat dissipation may be comparable (Lenovo has a similar-looking heatsink) but GPU upgrades are a no-go (Lenovo and HP both use a GPU whitelist in the BIOS). For the "big three" workstation manufacturers being discussed here, Dell is the only one that really has a path for cross-generation GPU upgrades.

 

I have compared the 7720 and P70 cooling systems:
From the appearance point of view: DELL Precision 7720 heat pipe size and layout, it seems more convincing.
From the actual use point of view: the two are almost the same when used daily, but in the limit state, 7720 is better than P70.

 

Why didn't that guy turn 7530 just a little bit more so that we could see if there is no E-Port...

Personally, having no E-Port is the biggest letdown for me.

 

I have the P71 and I would like to say that the cooling doesn't work even when undervolted.

With stock thermal paste, undervolted, will reach 85c on CPU only load. And you can imagine what happens during combined CPU+DGPU load.

Disassembly is a PITA, need display removal to even access the heatsink area.



Regarding MXM whitelist, I'm somewhat dubious of that happening now due to the standard MXM format of the Lenovo/HP models. Some 8xxx series HP with MXM3.0B slots accept up to 980M or 10xx with optimus enabled.

Most people claim whitelist because what happened with the idiotic W7xx series hardware incompatibility with normal MXMs, and the equally idiotic soldered GPU W series that came along with after it.
