@Ionising_Radiation Could you update us about the CPU undervolting? Has it caused you any issues/unstability? I'm interested in undervolting but I also have to weigh the pros and cons of not being able to update the BIOS in case they block undervolting in a future BIOS update.

 

No instability (so far), I have set a -50 mV undervolt. There's no real performance improvement either, as my ambient temperature delta is quite high (30 °C without air conditioning, 18 °C with).

The undervolt did temporarily disappear during the UEFI debacle last week, but I followed these instructions unclewebb posted a few pages ago to rewrite to the EFI variables, and all was okay again. I did have to also sign the linked grubx64.efi executable with my own keys to make sure it booted, so there...

 

I think the steps that have to be taken are "obscure" enough that this isn't something that Dell will "patch out" with future BIOS releases. You don't really need to worry about this too much until Dell actually breaks it ... only at that point would you have to decide if you want to stick with the last working BIOS version, or give up undervolting.

 

I was just thinking of this and was about to add it in. These machines have been released a year and a half after the Plundervolt CVE was announced publicly (December 2019), and the firmware can still be bypassed to get the undervolt working.

I really doubt Dell will patch this, because the procedure to get it working again is obscure enough.

 

Could you elaborate on your battery settings?

If anybody has the 4k screen and has calibrated the screen, could you share your ICC profile please?

 

I have a custom battery profile set up. It's set to not charge if the battery is above 85% and to stop charging at 90%. The purpose here is to prevent "topping off" the battery (that does the most damage in the charging process) and also to prevent it from starting a charge cycle if I just move the system from one outlet to another nearby (the system didn't have very much time to discharge). I used to have something more like 70/90 but I found that if the system goes too long without ever charging, then the OS will start reporting the battery charge level much higher than it really is, and the system will run out of power quickly when I actually need to use the battery.

 

I just use the Adobe RGB profile built in to the Dell Premier Color control panel and am having pretty good results.

 

What solutions have people come up with for cleaning the speaker grill? I don't want to wait for it to get too bad before I decide figure out how to clean that.

 

If your laptop is plugged in all the time and only unplugged from power when it's shutdown, what would you recommend I do with the battery? I have the one with 3 year warranty one... not the quick charger version.

 

I'd say just keep it in the computer. It's not that heavy considering the weight of the laptop, and incase of a poweroutage, your computer won't shutdown on the spot like a desktop would.
