Alright, placed my order finally! Decided to go (almost) all out! Was even able to get 2x32GB ram modules instead of 4x16GB for 64GB of ram! Here's the spec'd out computer coming my way:

Due to the Dock/USB problems Dell wants to replace the motherboard of my 7730 - oh my, hope it does not get worse...

 

This must be a joke. They perform try and error troubleshooting. The root cause would be the thunderbird interface. We all know the TB16 dock issues which are equal. So in my point of view it is a dock firmware tb hub driver issue.

 

If anyone has placed an order for 128GB RAM option (now available on dell site configurator), I'd be highly curious to know how well the laptop works once you receive it. My primary concern is that 8th gen Intel processor (i9 or xeon 2186) supports up to 64GB of RAM according to intel spec sheet unless I'm misunderstanding something:

Currently I have an M6400 precision purchased in 2009. Intel (R) Core (TM) 2 Extreme CPU Q9300 @ 2.53GHz. With nvidia F3700M of 1Gb. It came with Windows Vista. I switched to Windows 7 Ultimate, then Windows 10 until today. Over time I put 2 SSD drives. At the same time that windows 10 has been updated, devices have stopped working .... bluetooh, wifi ... It's time to change.

Looking for information about RAM at 3200 Mhz in dell Precision 7730 I found this forum. I've been reading all the posts for several days. I have learned a lot from your comments and based on them I have made a first configuration that I would like to be valued by you.
And I also have some doubt about that and I would like your advice because many of the choices are based on "the bigger the better". Another thing that I would like you to keep in mind when advising me is that I want a team, again, for several years.

It will be used for Tekla Structures, video editing, 3ds max, Inventor and Fusion. No games.
I know that, compared to what I have, any chosen option will be better.

The doubts:
* Regarding the video card, for the comments that the P5200 is blocked I have chosen the P4200. My question is if someone knows, for other similar situations, if the blockage is permanent or "tomorrow" a firmware could come out to unlock it.
** I have read that at the end of August Dell will offer RAM at 3200MHz. For now I will wait for those 15 days just to see the price. Would it be worthwhile, perhaps, for the future?
*** Is class 40 or 50 better? Could I add a 2TB 970 EVO later?
**** They offer Bluetooth 5.0 but cheaper and I find it strange.
***** I have had a bad experience with FIPS finger print. They replaced the equipment because it did not work and it never worked correctly. Without fingerprint reader !!!
****** I read that there are problems with the connection of the mouse and keyboard but not with the screens connected to the TB. If I connect the mouse and keyboard to the USB ports on the screen, will the problem be fixed?

You were able to request 2x32GB RAM from the config page? I didn’t think that stuff was out yet... NICE config

 

They are really very, very expensive, though.

 

For the SSD, I just went with a 256GB Class 40 and left the OS on it. I added another Samsung 960 PRO (essentially their class 50) for all of my stuff (programs, data). They are ridiculously expensive for SSD. You can certainly add a 2TB EVO.

Bluetooth 5.0 is more important on a phone than a laptop. Has to do more with extended range and battery life for devices. About the only thing most people connect to Bluetooth on a laptop is keyboard/mouse/headphones. I suppose if you like to wander the house on conf calls (I do), then it would be a good option. I went for Bluetooth 5.0 just because it was newer.

I also have had problems with the FIPS fingerprint reader. Honestly, the one on the XPS15 is way better and not so huge/depressed. If it doesn’t feel like working I just use my PIN, but that doesn’t work for things like password managers.

As for plugging everything in via your monitor, you still have to run a usb cable from your monitor to the dock or laptop at some point. HDMI and DisplayPort don’t carry USB data (correct me if I am wrong here).
