Precision 7530 & Precision 7730 owner's thread

The regular one shipped with Dell works fine. Even if I mix the regular one which is 2666 MHz with the g.skill ones together works fine, because the g.skill has to run at a lower speed.

 

Received a 5591 for company use last week, haven't really setup yet just get the windows updated to 1803. I requested for TB3 version for future proof. Will replace the hardisk with SSD next week. Coupled with TB16 later and P2418D monitor.

Actually, I was thinking to bring the computer around for mobility reasons and I thought the laptop would be a better option. For this unit, it comes with 64GB RAM whereas other laptops maxed at 32GB. Unfortunately I do not want an AMD option. If I were to opt for 64GB version, it would be MSITitan but it is slighter heavier and thicke. with full power, it will be hotter.

 

Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to give this a shot at some point today. I'm wondering if this firmware update increases the P3200 power limit... doubtful, but worth a shot I suppose.

Very disappointing to hear about the TB dock though. At times I find myself wondering if I should pick one up, but these issues seem very infuriating. I wonder how long it'll take before we see these become actually stable?

 

Is there any benefit to having the 6-cell battery in the 7730 over the 4-cell battery (apart from the very obvious)? I very rarely work with my Precision on battery power and so I could do with the slightly lighter laptop and extra 2.5" slot (I believe if you order the 4-cell battery there are 4 M.2 NVMe PCIe slots and one 2.5" HD slot right?

Other specs are the 1920x1080 screen, i9 CPU and P4200 GPU.

You are required to order the 6-cell battery if you get the P4200 GPU. The reasoning that has been given is, P3200 and up need to be able to draw more power from the battery and the 4-cell is not adequate. (More cells = more power can be drawn at once, in addition to more power being stored.)

I've been doing some CPU stress testing in XTU. Turns out my i9 was actually power throttling, not thermal throttling.

After undervolting by 75mV, I removed throttling until about the 8 minute mark of the stress test, when it started to actually thermal throttle. Further undervolting, to -100mV, removed the thermal throttling. The CPU now doesn't go over 90 degC during the XTU stress test. More importantly, the clock frequency is constant with 6 cores at 4.15GHz, with no fluctuation whatsoever.

Next, I'll rerun fire strike with this undervolt. That'll be later today, though.

 

Damn, exceeding 4 GHz on all six cores with just a 100 mV undervolt. It's hardly 150 MHz away from the stock all-core clock.

The 7730 seems to have some serious cooling...

 

Thanks, Aaron. I believe you and thought that was the case but when I was ordering my 7730 it allowed me to select either battery even though I had selected the i9 and P4200. It was only when I selected the IGZO it would not allow me to go for the 4-cell battery. I have since decided not to order the IGZO and have gone for the 1920x1080. I have asked Dell to clarify.

 

What were your clocks during stress test?
