If the refurb unit has ProSupport warranty attached, then you could call Dell for a speaker replacement. Depending on how cheap you got the refurb unit for, I'd say keep the machine and just ask Dell to replace it. While they're at it, you can repaste the notebook for improved thermal performance.

I didn't look into any of the warranty options, and went with the minimum. "PR M7730 : 3 Years Hardware Service with Onsite Service After Remote Diagnosis" With this as my warranty, think I would have luck calling them and asking them for a replacement part?

Worth asking them anyway, because it was a defect from the outset that shouldn't have been. Chances are they'll fix it for you.

It should be pretty easy to get them to send someone out and replace the speakers with this warranty. I'd try it. You might not even have to call, I think that there is an online chat that you can use.

Hallo. Is it possible to downgrade a bricked 7730 due to wrongdoing during Bios update?
Also ,are the DGFF gpu cards compatible both for the 7730 and 7530.?
    Thanks

No, they have different physical dimensions and layout.
Contact Dell support about your BIOS upgrade bricking.

So, for some reason, when Adobe Lightroom Classic CC is open and minimised, my power draw drops to around 7 W. This is repeatable and I observe it across reboots.

I'm not at home right now to post the power draw graph I've got, but there is a significant drop in power.

I'll attempt to do two complete battery drains, with and without Lightroom open, to see how noticeable the change in power draw (and hence battery life) is.

Methinks LR polls the NVIDIA GPU, and when it is minimised, explicitly tells the GPU to sleep, which, for some reason, the firmware doesn't. Anyone else has any idea, or care to corroborate this odd observation?

Hello - I'm seeking purchasing advice.

I have a 2015 M6800 that is starting to have some trouble. I'm a consulting mechanical enginerd and it's my main work computer. It's running Win7 pro because I generally view upgrades as a waste of energy; learning new stuff to do the exact same thing as before. The boot drive is a 1TB Crucial M550 mSATA SSD. I reloaded the OS, but it's not booting smoothly... seeing how I waste the whole day doing a OS wipe & software re-install, then I'm not sure how much energy I want to throw at it... billable time is money! I do however, have the original 500GB HDD in static bag labelled "Original M6800 Win7 OS". I could swap drives out and limp along and save the money for another while (MY money).

Or, I just punt on the M6800 and get the 7730?

I use one external monitor... it's also old; a high-gamut photographer's monitor... NEC LCD2690WUXi.... Changing the laptop might force a monitor upgrade???

    My uses:
Solidworks CAD < single 1-core threaded
Rare use of Abaqus FEA < ram limits size of problem, mine is also 1-core license
    Photoshop, Lightroom

I figure the 17" screen beast, even tho I sometimes work coffee shops and am building out my camper van as a mobile fun office. My eyes are not getting any younger.

See attached PDF guess at build:
    - fastest processor available... helps future-proof. Note that my uses are sometimes single-core.
    - Nvidia P4200.... the P5200 seemed too expensive for modest margin? I always get Nvidia.
    - the UHD 3830x2160 screen. I read this thread and realize there can be off-angle issues. Higher resolution than my external monitor, so I might have to replace that too.
    - RAM = 2x32GB 2666MHz, non-ECC.... so I could upgrade later if I find aftermarket??? It's not the fastest 2933MHz offered... but the 2666 is offered at 2x32 and the 2933 one is not. Do all four RAM modules have to match?
    - just one 1TB "class 50" PCIe SSD.... I can buy more for about $300 (since the 7730 has four slots... no more HDD).
    - is either Qualcomm vs. Intel Wifi better???
    - more warranty???
    - F'in $5k!

Since you're using it for work, it all adds up to whether that $5000 for a brand-new system is going to boost your productivity so much that it will give you more than that in income, thus offsetting the purchase amount, and you'll have to do the maths for that.

If you do want to upgrade, I recommend you stave off the need for maybe a month, because the Precision 7740 (with up to 8 core CPUs and Quadro RTX graphics) is arriving in early July.

Otherwise, as for your current system, you could clone said old drive overnight onto a new, larger mSATA (or M.2, if the 6800 supports it) SSD, make an image of the HDD and store it somewhere on the cloud and in two other places locally (maybe two large pen-drives?) and that's that.

Notebooks from 2015 (and especially the Precision) should last a while longer.
