Precision 7530 & Precision 7730 owner's thread

Hmmm. If you don't mind, could you download HWiNFO64 and check out your current, maximum, minimum and average power draw? You'll need to go to 'Sensors' from the tray icon to get to that.

 

Someone asked for power and hwinfo64 readings for a 7530 with no nVidia GPU. I have such a unit. I've attached a link with a screenshot showing those values. Let me know if you need anything else.

I think I figured out what reason for the differences in performance and fan behaviour might be. The CPU in new laptop needs more power because it runs on higher voltage when at similar speed compared to the old one (verified in HWiNFO). I thought that identical CPUs have exact same default voltage settings and the differences in performance come from differences in heat dispersion and consequent throttling. But it seems there's more to it. My guess is that maybe each CPU is tested at the end of production cycle and programmed with specific voltage settings. And the new one turned out to require higher voltage. When I undervolted it, the whole system started to behave similar to the old one with default settings. I simply might have lost in the CPU lottery this time. ;-)

What strikes me the most is the situation with fans. The annoying high pitch "pulsating" sound (noticable mostly when fans work at half speed, which often is the case) originally coming from the new laptop... is still there after I swapped the whole heat sink assembly (took the whole thing - fans, heat sink, heat pipes - from the old laptop). The old laptop, which got the supposedly faulty new heat sink assembly works fine. How come? A friend of mine has a theory (a hypothesis, if you will) that this might be caused by electrical characteristic of fan drivers built in into motherboard and PWM control they use. If that's the case, that's bad. No simple fan exchange will help. I can't find anything specific on that anywhere, hence cannot confirm this. Can anyone confirm if such explanation makes sense? Any way to fix it, other than having the whole motherboard replaced? That's the last issue I have with this laptop. I fix this, I finally rest. ;-)

As for HWINFO, could you unplug your machine, and open the Sensors window (the one in the background in your screenshot, with the long table of values), scroll down to the battery section, and monitor your power draw?

One more thing... If you could also plug in your Service Tag into this website, and get the part number of the placeholder DGFF card that's in your machine, that'd be great. You'll have to navigate to 'System Configuration', click 'original configuration' and search through the manifest.

Has anyone here had temperature issues after switching to AHCI mode from raid? For some reason the intel PCH chip on my laptop idles like 20C hotter now
