Both machines are silent when doing normal tasks. When the fans come on the HP fans are lower-pitched and are quieter, but not by much.

The Dell has a better keyboard layout than HP's imo; specifically the arrow keys and 'page up/down' key arrangement. The keyboard on the HP has less flex and is less 'spongy' than the Dell keyboard. Key travel is about the same.

How did you manage to install the TPM firmware update?

I cleared TPM in the BIOS Settings und afterwards could start the firmware install process.
The notebook restarted (and hat to reset the Windows PIN) but the version is still the old one.

I have very similar config (I have the OEM 1TB NVME drive) , but how did u get Unbuntu install to recognize the NVME drive - Intel RST gets in the way as its set to RAID

Why do you not just switch it to AHCI, if you aren't using any RAID arrays?

I checked the SPD content and 1333 is not supported. Also Thaiphoon Burner is not able to write to the SPD (write to SMBus addresses 50-57h are disabled by bios). Seems I need new ram.

You could get yourself a hardware programmer and an SOIC8 clip, and try to program the SPD data directly.

On boot I see the Ubuntu splash screen on both laptop(1980x1020) and
monitor(Dell 2415Q-3840x2160) but after entering pwd - the laptop monitor is
fine but on the external monitor its all black, but i can see the mouse cursor and
when i drag (eg terminal) onto the second monitor it stays all black and i cant see the
app. Looks like the colors on the second monitor are all screwy

    The monitor is definately recognised
