All I can say is, I suspect that the heatsink is the same; we haven't had people replacing GPUs in this system at this point in time so these details are unknown, some previous Precision systems have used separate heatsinks for AMD and NVIDIA GPUs.

Thanks for the detailed reply. So I assume the cable ribbons are the same no matter what the build, and it’ll just be a case of purchasing a new bezel for the screen with webcam hole, a webcams and then just plugging it into the existing ribbon cable which is already there?

Same with the fingerprint reader as well I guess, new palm rest and plugging the cable from the reader into the board with the existing ribbons.

I’m just hoping the ribbons are the same on every build and Just not plugged in lol

Also, what is the quadro p3200 like for gaming? I know it isn’t designed for gaming. I’ve heard it’s between the 1060 and the 1070?

You know, I can't really be sure. The cables are different between the 1080p and 4K screens, but they're more on the display end. But what's this experiment for? Do you want to buy a Precision with no configured webcam, fingerprint reader, etc. and add them in yourself?

If so, I strongly suggest you instead choose to purchase your Precision with those options pre-configured, as they'd be cheaper in the long run, and you'd get warranty support. Onsite ProSupport is really useful, as you can be in school, at work, or even in transit, and you'll get a technician where you are, and fix things for you, without you ever having to visit a workshop or warranty centre.

The only difference between the notebook Quadros and the GeForce GTXs are the drivers; the cores and chip layouts are exactly the same. In principle, the P3200 should approach or equal the performance of a GTX 1070 MQ; in real life, we see performance slightly worse than the GTX 1060 because of the power limits and the rather slow memory clock.

There is a preconfigured dell certified refurbed machine online for £1470 with a quadro p3200, 8850h, 16gb of ram but its missing a webcam and fingerprint reader....to build the machine from new with the other options (the cost here of a webcam and fingerprint reader is something like £20 extra, so why this wasn’t chosen I don’t know...). To build the same machine from new would be £2600, so it’s a massive saving.

I think you could get Dell to install those for you, too—maybe £50+ or so, based on what you want. It'd be easier than sourcing for the parts (which would likely be rather rare) yourself. I am fairly sure Dell is up t doing aftermarket re-configuration upgrades. But yes, that refurbished notebook is an absolute steal. Go for it.

    Last question...

On the dell website I can either have 32gb of SODIMM ram or 32gb of SDRAM....does the precision take desktop size ram then? What would be the benefit of selecting 32gb of SDRAM over SODIMM ram? It is £312 to upgrade to SDRAM!

It does not take desktop RAM, which are DIMMs.

I believe the text is just a slight error, because SDRAM is short for synchronous dynamic random access memory, which is the type of RAM that is in common use today. SODIMM is the form factor of RAM for notebooks.

    How come 32gb of ram (1 x 32gb SODIMM) is £312 cheaper than 2 x 16gb?

Psssst... I think it's an error. You just got 32 GB of RAM for a lot less than usual. Click that option and go through with the transaction and see what you get.

    US site for comparison.
