    Upgrade Path.

I'm interested in getting the 7510 to replace my M4700. As I've always done, I am interested in getting one that isn't FULLY spec'd out to save on my initial purchase. I assume memory and HDD are both upgradeable so I'll skip those. My question is, how low spec'd can I go while still having a decent upgrade path?

    - Can I upgrade the processor aftermarket, or does the motherboard requirements change if I were to want the XEON. (I assume I'd not have an issue upgrading the i5 to the i7 later.) I know you need to change your smartcard preference in you are including the XEON in your purchase.

    - The M200M video card is an MXM card, would I have any issues upgrading the ATI to NVIDIA after market? (Assuming I can get the part OEM).

    - I assume the LCD screen is all or nothing. (Not too interested in Webcam or Microphone.)

    - Also assume the 72Wh and the 91WH batteries are interchangeable.

    - Backlit Keyboard I assume is replaceable, but a hassle for the $35 savings.

So yeah, I guess my 2 big concerns are processor and video card upgrades. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

As with most new machines, the processor is soldered to the motherboard. That probably wouldn't rule out a motherboard swap however. The MXM slot would likely allow a GPU upgrade down the line.

That said I don't see a savings in getting the minimum processor, unless possibly you just run single threaded apps. I think the extra $35 for the backlit keyboard is worth it.

Sometimes the Precisions have slightly different heatsink for AMD vs NVIDIA GPU. We don't know about 7510 yet but it might make upgrading the GPU a bit more tricky if they are indeed different.

Processor is soldered, as others have said. Not upgradable, without a motherboard swap. Unless you have a very specific reason to want ECC memory, the speed difference on the Xeon is a waste of money. OTOH, the i7 option is likely well worth it over the i5 for most workloads.

Yes, although there won't be much of an aftermarket for them until the machine is a lot older... and while you're ordering from Dell, it's more cost effective to get the bigger battery in the first place unless you really need two batteries.

    Indeed, why bother?

While replaceable, I'm not sure if there are any current-generation MXM cards on the open market yet.

Dear umiki, I am unable to check my display model under OpenSUSE, however my UHD screen is astonishing. This display has widest colour gamut, widest viewing angles and best clarity I have ever seen and I have seen a lot.

If you have any problems or issues, it would be manufacture defect. However, give some time to display. Some professionals monitors need few hours after manufacturing and few minutes after every start to get colour/contrast/saturation stability. If it would not help, call the support and ask for new display.

For everybody: on hardware layer new Dell Precision 7510 is the best 15-inches mobile workstation in the world. 4K display is amazing, coiling system keeps the notebook cold even on full load, the keyboard is nice and the port layout is almost perfect (power plug and network on rear side, two digital video outputs, easy access to USB).

Although, there are some small issues on software layer (BIOS and firmware): notebook does not work properly with "Switchable graphics" disabled and the M2-PCIe-NVMe High Performance (actually Samsung SM951) SSD drive does not support hardware encryption (OPAL). I hope Dell and Samsung will offer BIOS and SSD firmware upgrades.

The part number mentioned earlier is a TFT panel. Is yours a TFT panel also? I was surprised to hear about the quality. Especially because Dell is boasting about the display. I prefer an IPS panel but maybe they can do wonders with the TFT panels.

My display part number is 391-BCFH and the part name 15.6" UltraSharp UHD IGZO(3840x2160) Wide View Anti-Glare LED-backlit with Premium Panel Guarantee. This is almost as good as professional EIZO highest monitor models for graphics and photographers.

Really amazing and I can recommend it for everybody who cares about image quality.

The description is the same as mine, but I don't have any DELL part number. I really would like to know the sharp part number of your panel...
As I wrote, my panel has been already changed with an other one, same model, after I sent the picture of the comparison side by side of a laitude E6520 standard screen 4 years old and of the precision 7510 UltraSharp UHD IGZO(3840x2160) Wide View Anti-Glare LED-backlit (embarassing ...), but the new panel has same defects. So: or dell sell different panels with the same description and your has better performance, or there is a batch of flawed panels

by the way, I worked with it a couple of days with it, it is annoying
