I forgot to mention that I have a 14.1 inch display. My laptop is the Dell E6400.

After reading notebook journal's test I'm not surprised about the complaints:

    http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/641/4

170:1 contrast ratio on the LED panel is no better than the CCFL counterparts. Although the brightness is much higher than the CCFL (typically around 200 nits), that's actually worse, because that means with a 170:1 contrast ratio the black level is higher on the LED panel than on the CCFL panels.

    Hi John,

Just noticed this thread. Is there a list somewhere where you can check if a display is a led backlight ?

The device id string for the display on my e4300 "DISPLAY\LCD2207\4&24E3510&0&00000400&00&02" but I'm not having much luck tracking the manufacturer or display type.

AFAIK the only display option for the E4300 has an LED backlight.

However, I don't know who makes the panel with code LCD2207 - there's no clue in that code about the manufacturer's name. I presume it is neither LG-Philips (LGP) nor Samsung (SEC).

The real test is how does the display look?

I would love to see a review directly comparing the Latitudes to the T400 and T500. I would say those are both the business class type of PCs that would be competing.

Brighter that a D630 but I don't think Apple have anything to worry about.

    I have 3 but I assume that's due to the laptop's built-in support for projector/screen cloning/multimonitor:

    DISPLAY\LPL0140\4&4F14A64&0&80871400&00&22
    DISPLAY\LPL0140\4&81526A4&0&00000400&00&02
    DISPLAY\LPL0140\4&81526A4&0&80861500&00&02

So I have LG. Is the Samsung panel also direct-sunlight viewable? Are the Macbook Pro's panels?

I recently had the opportunity to compare the e6400 14.1" wxga+ Samsung led screen I've been complaining about to a 14.1" wxga+ ccfl screen on an hp 6930p (manufacturer: CMO). The contrast on the HP is clearly better, not WAY better, but definitely noticeable. Also the viewing angles were somewhat better as well. Both have horrible default colors (the e6400 is probably worse). However, despite its flaws and my complaints I think i might prefer the e6400's screen. The 6930p was quite grainy while the e6400 has absolutely zero grain. Also the e6400 goes way brighter (though the 6930p is not bad here, just the e6400 goes amazingly bright). I do think the 6930p is much better than the e6400 in most other ways though (build quality & touchpad quality, etc) but thats a different topic altogether.

That's surprising to hear that the HP's build quality is superior. I always though of HP has the most inferior of the three business manufacturers - Dell, Lenovo, HP.

    The Samsung is direct-sunlight viewable.
