Could that explain why people are saying contrast/detail sucks on the Dell E-Series LED?

I know that compared to the glossy XPS led, my D820 matte seems not as detailed/fresh nor as bright obviously.

Possibly. The anti-glare coating slightly degrades the image quality. However, my LG 14.1" panel is better than most glossy displays and doesn't have any reflection problems.

Even considering the screen is matte, contrast is still mediocre. Put it next to the matte screen of Macbook Pro 15" and you'll know what I mean.

The LG panels that Dell uses are supposed to have better contrast than the Samsungs though. I haven't seen any data on the LG yet.

This photo (photo, not screen shot) from my E6400 review does reasonable justice to the contrast of my LG display.

I prefer matte screens over glossy any day and still think my samsung LED screen is far from good (but I'm picky and used to good displays). What I'm not used to is the bad viewing angles (compared to other screens I've used) and not so good black levels (and therefore contrast), but this seems to affect ALL 14.1" screens these days, so while the LG screen is probably better overall, I likely still wouldn't be 100% satisfied. I think I'm more sensitive to these issues because I use predominantly dark backgrounds and use white text, black background for my text editors which makes the shortcomings of the screen far more noticeable. Also I tend to be in darker rooms/not in sunlight (in sunlight the screen is actually one of the best I've seen).

The macbook pro matte screen is one I'd be 100% happy with though.

edit: oh and the detail isn't what sucks, it's the contrast (black levels) and viewing angles (vertical) which suck to me at least

I think the LED backlit display on the E6400 is the best screen Dell has put on a laptop to date. It is really bright and may even go dimmer than the CF backlit ones, and if you want to be impressed take it out in direct sunlight. It is direct sunlight viewable! I've been bragging it up to everyone. But I don't use Mac's so maybe I just don't know what I'm missing... Is the Macbook Pro's also direct sunlight viewable?

Do you have the LG-Philips (LPL) or the Samsung (SEC)? The code is in the Device Instance ID string in the Monitor properties in Device Manager.

hey...i was curious...when i go to device manager...and i cright click on my monitor properties...it says generic monitor...

when i click on details...and in the "property" thing i click on device instance path...or 'hardware IDs' ...basically this comes up...Monitor/sec5442...

does that mean i have the samsung?

and is the samsung or the lg the better one?

when i ordered my computer i ordered the 'better' one (better in this case meaning the more expensive...i said why not)....

in my order form it is....

    320-6779 14.1 WIDE WXGA+ ANTIGLARE,LED,LAT E6400 ....

    does all that match up?

    thanks guys

The sec5442 means the Samsung display. Some people have grumbled about the quality, but both the LG and Samsung WXGA+ displays wash out at very high brightness.

The "better" display, in terms of cost, means the WXGA+ option with the LED backlight. This has higher resolution, brighter backlight and/or lower power consumption than the standard screen. However, Dell sources these screens from both LG-Philips and Samsung and there's no control over which gets used.
