I have access to a TechNet subscription from Microsoft so I can get any version of Windows I want. I don't need this right away so I can wait awhile til coupons come out. I heard that Dell is having a spring clearance sale starting tomorrow with coupons so hopefully there's something I can use for a E6400.

The best version of Windows for the E6400 is Windows 7, IMO. I have been using 7.7048 x64 for over a month now, and it is very stable.

Hmmm.... I bought an E6400 for a co-worker about a month ago and I thought it had an ExpressCard (EC) slot, a PCMCIA (PC) slot AND a Smart Card (SC) slot ... I thought the E6400's came with all three by default ...

EC or PC I believe, but not both. This must be on a Nvidia card correct?

The Express Card slot and the PCMCIA are mutually exclusive. You can only have one of the two. The choice is available for both Nvidia and for Intel graphics.

Yes, on the E6400 it is either EC or PC. The latter provides backwards compatibility. I think the Smart card reader is provided as standard.

I believe that the bigger E6500 has both EC and PC.

I received my "previously ordered new" E6400 today and I'm disappointed by the build quality. The battery and the entire left half of the lower panel is loose and one of the keys is not flush with the rest of the keyboard. Dell agreed to replace the battery attachment and the lower panel but I'm not sure if I want this one anymore.

What you can do is ask for a replacement if you want one. I did that and happened to get a new laptop out of it :D. Or, if you have at-home service, they can just send out a tech to replace those parts. You have to remember you are sorta taking a craphshot with build quality with the outlet since it includes models with build issues...
