    The refresh I was referring to was the newer CPUs and 4k screen (i.e. i7-4800 + QHD+ screen vs. i7-4820 + 4k screen) - these are already out and on sale.

    The new models are the 7510/7710 you're asking about.

    Precision doesn't allow overclocking on the CPU's for system stability reasons.

    Up to 32GB memory, double the M3800, and with overclocked memory options also.

    You will need to wait a few additional months for the Thunderbolt 3 options to be available.

    @Dell-Mano_G

    Do you know if the 7710 display will be 30-bit?

    Right, but it's still a pretty thick 17'' laptop, it's not like they are starved for space (say if the thing was as thin as MSI's WS60 they'd have a point).
    I agree that this is a very "non-workstation" approach, which seems to have been the way it was for the entire thing to be honest.

    Uh, not sure what are you smoking that avatar :p, but the M4x00/M6x00 "refreshes" are the 7510/7710 and he was referring those regarding Thunderbolt.

    Because USB-C/TB3 is the new format everything will be using it going forward? Especially since workstations tend to last several years, so future-proofing is pretty useful.

    I remember when the first m6500's were released in early 2010. They were shipping with USB2.0 (USB 3.0 wasn't out yet). Then a few months later they began shipping with USB3.0 NEC ports on the left side (daughter board). If I recall, those daughter boards were upgradable to the newer USB3.0. And if I recall Dell made that upgrade available through their support for a reasonable fee.

    perhaps something like that would be possible in the 7710, for a fee... but I doubt it. The reason I say that is because Dell is making it known ahead of time that thunderbolt 3 will not be available until later. Back in 2010 it was different because there was no notification of the 2.0 to 3.0 change until after it happened which angered some owners of the earlier release.

    I'd love to see if it were technical possible to upgrade though. I wonder how nice it is to service or repair the new 7000 series. Changing a CPU fan on the old m6500 required almost complete disassembly.

    Going by model numbers, I would call the 4800/6800 with updated CPUs and screens a refresh, and the 7510/7710 new models.

    Does that help you understand?

    My bad, I didn't know M4800/M6800 were updated with new screens/CPUs.
