    I couldn't agree more.

Same here, I can assure you.

Here's where we differ, to some degree, but maybe that's more of a "glass half-full" versus "glass half-empty" difference: Compared to what I was asking for (and what could be reasonably asked for in a new OS, mind you), Windows 8.1 has done next to nothing in that regard, but, yeah, it is better than nothing at all, I guess...

It does. 2880x1800 on mac is just a gimmick. What's the max "effective" resolution in osx? 1680 x 1050. With all the stupid downscaling for sharpness! And yes, you can get all 2880x1800 but it requires tweaking, potentially installing windows and shooting yourself in the foot. Just 2 cents from someone who had actually owned a retina macbook pro...

Now, I'm not saying 16:9 is not a gimmick but let's face it, - 16:10 is gone! And stop looking at crapple as an example. So yeah, a Dell with a 16:9 3200x1800 would always be the winner in my book when compared to a crapple with a retina screen, period.

What do you guys think the chances of the antiglare Premiercolor IPS display still being an option available on the M6800?

Very high, that display fills a niche that only HP fills as well, if Dell drops it, they'll loose a bunch of Precision customers to HP.

Have they given any reason as to why it is no longer available on the non-covet M6700? I understand why it was discontinued on the M4700 but from what I understood the 17 inch version of the panel was fine. I know it has been on my M6600 atleast.

Nope, but I would guess either short supply, they are keeping stock for the next gen of Precisions or they are being greedy.

Well you certainly do dream big don't you?

The difference is minor one. Roughly the same as the ratio between 1080p and 2k.

You should also keep in mind that these are still only acceptable standards not formal since the technology has no practical application yet.

    I dream in large format.

I remember when a Nokia with a color screen was a battery-sapping gimmick and 1080p was a dream, now you can get it on a phone.

Yes, but scaling artefacts are poor with such a scaling ratio, and even more pronounced once the picture is on an 85" display. Even 10-bit color is inadequate at 85". Some in the industry are suggesting that 16-bit or better might be necessary... Imagine the bandwidth requirements!

Digital Cinema and RAW capture on high-end equipment (such as SONY and RED cameras) is at True 4K or better. Legacy film stock is being digitised using an 8K scan and down-sampled to 4K. The QuadHD resolution was arrived at, in large part, because current HDMI could not quite reach the True 4K resolutions, even though DisplayPort can.

In other news, Tweakers has an additional leak on the M4800 and M6800:
Dell brengt in september Precision M4800- en M6800-laptops uit - Computer - Nieuws - Tweakers

The key take-away: The laptops are expected to be officially announced next week and should be available in September.

interesting. It is possible the 3200 x 1800 actually is wide gamut capable? as there is no reason they don't use the already announced 2880 x 1600.

M6100 will be 8870 or 8970? anyone betting ? Nivida is boring though ~~

    As it turns out: 0%

The dutch website Tweakers reported this Saturday that Dell has dropped the IPS screen and the 3D screen options on both the M4800 and M6800. The touch screen option is still available.

Only the M4800 with its 15.6" screen will be available in the 3200x1800 resolution, the M6800 is stuck with 1920x1080.

The chassis of both the M4800 and M6800 has not changed. Both will have Haswell CPUs, but there's no info yet on which CPUs.

The number of USB 3.0 ports has been doubled from 2 to 4.

The M4800 can be configured with an AMD FirePro M5100 with 2GB gddr5, the Nvidia Quadro K1100M or the Nvidia Quadro K2100M also with 2GB gddr5.

The M6800 can be configured with an AMD FirePro M6100 or Nvidia Quadro K3100M, K4100M or K5100M.

Both will have Waves MaxxAudio Pro and can optionally be configured with WiGig wireless technology.

Dell will probably announce the new M4800 and M6800 next week and both will be available in September.
