I never thought about the XP compatibility mode. I'll give that a try on one of my other laptops. Most of my work requires me to have Oracle Apps open for testing my programs and doing setups. I don't think I'd want to spend 80% of my time on this laptop in a VM... although I bet that would work. Good idea. It may be an alternative with just Oracle Apps in a vm and the rest of my work in the native Windows 7 64 bit os. I throw in another 4gig at this laptop (2 or 3 gig for the vm and 5-6 gig for the native os).

But the XP compatibility mode sounds cool. Thanks for the tips! I'll post up if that works

    Ben

I'm hardly looking... and nothing... I suppose Dell want us to pay the high price here in Europe (compare to US prices, I do feel like a rich & fat pigeon).

I found a good deal trought a french forum (-10% and -100€ on final price, and you even can add coupon to that if you find any), but it only applies to France. Let me now if interested.

    Hi All,

    Question,

Is anyone using Autodesk products on the M6500, AutoCAD 2010, Revit 2010
if yes how is the NVIDIA 3800M working with AutoCAD.

And did anyone buy the 3M Custom-Fit LCD Filter, do you turn the filter on & off with Fn keys?

    Thank You

XPM works and I have to use it on all of our Windows7 machines to support older IE6 based web apps and programs that need old versions of JRE as well as Oracle 8i based apps.
Basically installed XPM on one windows7 machine setup the OS how you want and then take the image file and you can just copy it to windows7 machine with XPM and you are done.

Plus it is integrated with the OS. so when you install programs in XPM it shows up in the start menu of Win7.

Thanks for the update ygohome. I sure opened up a can of worms getting this discount.

So I called Dell this morning and was on the phone for 2 hours, bouncing between sales and customer care, simply trying to apply this discount to my original order (which was still in production). Turns out they had to cancel my original order and reorder it again to apply the discount. Also, they don't have the $1220 discount in their system, they had to grab it from my shopping cart after I build an identical unit from that link.

I was a little irate that the shipping date had to move from 1/5 to 1/18 (I ordered this laptop on 12/2); and Dell's order system has no way to simply price adjust an item that wasn't yet charged... so after the original order was canceled, the laptop in the factory that was probably going to ship this week kinda goes off to limbo.

But Customer Care put a note in to rush production. Hope that will work.

They also upgraded the brick to a slim power adapter for free as their order system was having problems allowing the order to go through without it... (who creates those flags?). Overall, despite the SNAFUs, I am hopeful I'll get the laptop soon.

Hi this is the system spec i have just ordered, ill likely be putting an intel ssd and an existing 200gig 7200rpm disk in it as well as upgrading to 12 gigs ram once it arrives.

Im not sure how good a deal i got at almost £1400 ex vat as i could have got a m6400 refurb at a lot less but i recon potential 16gigs of ram, 3 x 2.5" drives and a ssd slot and the slowest/hottest cpu of the generation will give it some legs to upgrade over the next couple of years. Hopefully once the 35nm shrink is done intel will release a bonkers mobile chip with huge amounts or cache/clock headroom.

Im also pretty chuffed i was able to get an ATI gpu and actually save cash as i really dont want nvidia binary drivers on my linux install. I plan on using this for a bunch of VM's not drawing so would have taken intel graphics if an option.

If anyone knows the part no for the 2nd disk bay caddy it would be appreciated, i thought i saw it on this thread but cant find it in 30+ pages now.

Also if anyone knows a way to get dell to run the aerial for the 3G modem even though it hasnt been released yet in the uk i would also prefer to get that fitted at the factory and fit the card afterwords.
