New M6500 Discussion Thread

They used to ship the bracket with the M6400! They even stated as much in the service manual.
Guess Dell are cutting costs to the bone these days...........

 

I'm not sure for the great disparity before and after the memory upgrade. Originally I had 4GB total, 2x2GB 1333. Twice WEI scored 5.9. I ran WEI twice after the upgrade to 2x4GB 1333 and it was 7.3. Then after I put the other 2x2GB in the last 2 slots it still scored 7.3.

I'm not really worried about it but the memory in question was Samsung PC3 1333mhz 10600S.

I hope this helps but as soon as others start receiving their m6500 we will certainly find out if I was an anomaly. It's quite possible, I was the first to receive the build and ordered it on the 12/4.

Also note, I did an HDD upgrade at the same time to a 128GB SSD drive so that required a re-install of Windows 7 Ultimate.

 

Well I've read where they supposedly did and didn't, but I can assure you mine can in no way mount the 2nd HDD. I see the bridge where the connectors would be (as shown in the picture earlier) but there's no way it would connect to what is currently there. It's also not a caddy, it's a bracket of some sort to lock the drive in place. The m6500 is caddyless, access to both drive bays must be done by removing the bottom cover.

Here is the entire parts list for my machine in its original state. Could someone identify where the mounting bracket pieces are in this list, if any.

Here's the part that I probably need: "Dell (Original) 2.5" SATA Drive Tray and Interposer for Dell M6400". It looks exactly like what is in HDD bay #1.

Other ramblings:

1) There is a random crackling sound that comes from what is most likely a speaker at the top left area of the unit.. I noticed it when I first started playing with the machine and it stopped after the OS reinstall but reappaeared when I installed the sound drivers. I didn't really play with the machine much before reinstalling the sound drivers so it may be there regardless...not sure.

2) The updated drivers from the Nvidia website do not recognize the card. I had this problem previously with my other notebook which has the Quadro 1500M and would need to use laptopvideo2go.com as a source to find updated drivers. I will try some of these later tonight if I have time.

 

other than price and the inability to install more than 8gb, are their any CONS to selecting the 1600Mhz memory vs the 1333?

I seem to be reading conflicting information... some forums say that the core i7 would actually throttle down if it see the 1600 and performance would suffer.

Would like to order the M6500 on Monday.

Sorry to post info more appropriate to the customer service forum, but I thought this would be something others waiting on their m6500s might see. A day after entering the boxing stage (info from the phone order status line), my estimated delivery date jumped from Jan 4 to Jan 18. I should actually get the machine by the 4th based on watching the order dates and statuses of the many systems we order at work over the years. Not sure why Dell always tries to pad EDD dates by two weeks.

Then again, I have never seen a system sit in testing for a week either.

 

The 1600MHz memory only works with the Intel i7 - 920XM processor. It will not work with the others.

Are there any performance cons to the higher speed memory?

I really think these different "stages" are just a means of DELL setting customer expectations so the buyers don't call them every day asking "are we there yet?".
