John, is it possible your thigh is blocking the vent somewhat (which may be an additional contributor to the heat)?

As far as I can tell, the configuration is fixed.

The heat level in regular browsing and other light use is barely warm with the i7-6820HQ. If you don't need the dGPU and the cost is the same or better, picking the i7-6820HQ is a no-brainer. As for T460p vs. E5470, on a similar non-dGPU configuration, I'd choose on ergonomics which are very personal -- personally, I prefer the Dell design.)

(The two main reasons to consider the T460p are the hidpi screen -- not something I wanted, but important to some folks -- and the different dGPU option; I have NO idea anymore which is the better one, as neither one is big enough to be much use for gaming, and either one is overkill for software development.)

No, because the air intake is over the gap between my legs. That is probably the hottest area when the fan is not running because that's where the CPU is, but it's not in contact with my body. The next hottest area is the other end of the heat pipe which causes that corner of the computer to heat up when the fan isn't blowing the heat away. Simple tasks such as web browsing or working in Word don't generate much heat but something with a little more CPU activity (eg 50% of 1 core) can cause the temperatures to be just below the threshold where heat and fan are in balance.

Thanks for the info. I noticed the there is only HDMI output on the E5470. Does anyone know if it supports 2560x1440 @60hz?

Probably not; in general, Skylake only does HDMI 1.4 natively -- machines with Thunderbolt 3 generally do HDMI 2.0 but that's actually generated by the Thunderbolt controller.

I don't have a HiDPI desktop monitor to test this.

If you you're doing this at home or your office, you might try getting a used E-dock (they're pretty cheap) -- the external DisplayPort via the dock should be able to handle that resolution without problems.

Hmm thanks good to know. I bit the bullet and bought the t460p, as I had to decide today. It has a lower quad core but better everything else in my opinion. Obviously not super confident with my decision but gotta live with it now ha. Thanks for all the info!

    Hi all,

Lenovo after 6 days of waiting cancelled my order for a really stupid reason.

So I have another chance to look into the Dell. I wanted to ask if anyone has actually used a dock with the E5470 and which one specifically? If I can buy the dock and it will 100% work with this laptop on display port 2560x1440p @ 60hz, then I might just go ahead and buy it. Any info would be really helpful.

    Thanks!

I have a edock plus (not usb 3.0). Model numbers are confusing, preusb3.0 may have some model numbers as usb3.0

2xDVI (1080p) , able to do triple monitor extended mode (DVI, DVI, laptop internal). Don't have anything higher than 1080p, so no reason to try display port or DVI dual link

The laptop has usb 3.0 on the sides, so don't really need usb 3.0 at the back. Only 3.0 devices I have are flash drives which would be easy to plug into laptop

Thanks paper. My current work laptop stopped working so I decided to accelerate the purchase. It was a nice Sony laptop that went strong for five years. I bought the e5470 with 6820hq and 1080. Bought from outlet so already came with a SATA SSD for super cheap (it didn't say if it was m.2 form factor or not) but bought 32GB of RAM separately, for use with in-memory analytics which is what I will often use for.

I'm going to install ubuntu gnome 16.04, hopefully there are no issues. The laptop arrives tomorrow. Gonna try the hdmi first see if at least I can get 1440p at 30Hz. Either way will probably get a port replicator at some point, maybe if there is a next gen coming out or something like that.

    Thanks for all the info.

good choice on coming back to Dell.

One hugely annoying things about Thinkpad is no right / left click buttons on the trackpad. I love that Dell keeps this. Also, the e5470 is nicer looking laptop :)
