I'll give it a look tomorrow. Odd thing is the touchscreen, which is using the same cable, works though. That cable is specially made to handle heat but you might be on to something!

Anyway, this is my second touchscreen LCD where the webcam just mysteriously stopped functioning! I have also posted my query to the Dell Forums, hopefully they might know a thing or two. Especially the A16 BIOS update, which has a very vague description on what it fixes.

If nothing works, I'll have to return this to the seller.

Err, the webcam and the screen should be using different cables. I had trouble with mine before (M6700) and it turned out the connection was just loose.

Yes, but the touchscreen component of the screen shares the share cable with the webcam.

Just curious, does anyone in the forum have the instructions on how to take a touchscreen apart or knows how to take it apart?

The owner's manual doesn't cover the touchscreens at all.

Did Dell ever make a 4K LCD for the M6800?

Also is it possible to install a gaming video card onto it without modding drivers or losing the digitally signed status?

There is no 4K LCD for the M6800. There was for the M4800, though.

AFAIK you will have to tweak the display driver INF file to get a gaming card like the GeForce 980M to work. There are reports of Quadro M5000M (equivalent to 980M) working in M6700 with no modifications to the driver, imagine it would work in the M6800 as well.

Found out the issue I have been having with my webcams!

Thinking the webcam on the first touchscreen has gone bad, I ordered a second touchscreen as a replacement.

Initially the webcam on the second touchscreen worked in Win10 for a short while but suddenly stopped working. I reverted Win10 back to the initial install state and no go there. So I reverted back to Win8.1 and still no go. I guess it is just my luck, the webcam on the second touchscreen did indeed fail. No matter what I do, no hardware shows up. Not even an unidentified USB device. My final conclusion is, it is indeed a hardware failure and not some driver or software issue.

So back to installing the first touchscreen onto the system. Now the webcam is working... odd! After comparing at the Win10 and Win8.1 setups, I can pin it down to my Huawei WWAN driver installation or something from it. In my Win8.1 setup, the Huawei WWAN card is there but no software/drivers were installed for it.

I'll have a play around later on to see if it is really the issue.

I am going to Purchase a M4800 Precision and it does not have the fingerprint reader, I have at the moment an E6520 Latitude, and it came without the fingerprint reader also so I installed a palm rest with fingerprint reader, installed software for the same from Dell and all works very well. With the question can a fingerprint reader be added to the m6800 precision, my answer here would be yes, buy a palm rest on Ebay w/fingerprint reader for the M6800 and it should work fine, no matter what Dell tell you the connections are there on the motherboard as the new palm rest will come with all the connections required, just swap and configure. The same applies to the E6500 series also if no fingerprint reader is not installed when bought.

Bingo! Just that they are a tad hard to find new or second hand currently. I had a hard time finding one with the fingerprint reader. Did find a few with the FIPS scanner but wasn't interested in them.

    Dell Precision M6800 Keyboard
DELL-Jennifer K answered: Hi @elpidio, Thank you for writing to Dell Community Forum! From Dell we wouldn't suggest the user's to go ahead with the upgrade from non back light to back light because the connector which connect's the keyboard to the system board is of a different type. The cable which works with back light keyboard wouldn't be compatible with the existing connector on the system board which would require system board replacement. Hoping this helps. Regards,
