    Hello,
I have a Precision M6800 with an i7 4800QM cpu and 8GBs of DDR 3 1600 ram installed. Does anyone know why I am unable to install any new memory that is larger than 8GBs (4 sticks x 2GBs per stick). According to the users manual the M6800 with any i7 cpu with 4 cores can be upgraded to 32GBs of ram. I also looked up the cpu on Intel's website and they too say that this CPU supports up to 32GBs of DDR3 1600 ram. I tried to use 32GBs of Samsung DDR3 1600 ram that was taken out of a Precision M6700 and the M6800 will not post.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated,
    Thanks,
    Robert

I believe your i7 is a 4800MQ as 4800QM doesn't seem to exist according to the links below:

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000007393/processors.html
    https://ark.intel.com/products/75128/Intel-Core-i7-4800MQ-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_70-GHz

According to the specs it does support dual channel up to 32GB but limited to DDR3L and LPDDR3.

Are the rams from the M6700 DDR3 or DDR3L? Have a look at the labels of the rams. It should say either PC3-xxx or PC3L-xxx somewhere on it. If it is PC3 (without the L) then u are out of luck. It doesn't work on 4th Gen Intel Core i7 CPUs.

Thanks for your reply, yes I miss typed the CPU number and I the memory is samsung memory but I think it is regular DDR3 not the 3L. I obviously missed the L following the DDR3 when I looked up the CPU on the Intel website. I appreciate your assistance.

Glad to help. I came across this issue recently, so I gave it shot to see whether it might the same in your case.

Hello guys - sorry to bump up an old post.

Got a M6800 with Core i7-4900MQ (2.9Ghz, upto 3.9Ghz TurboBoost) in the office. Have just repasted it with Gelid GC3 (CPU, GPU). Pretty decent application I think.

In the Dell diagnostics, it seems to still have the max temp of 96 degrees (normally around 70-80s when not stressing very heavily). I guess even new, with the 4900MQ - it can run hot. Would it be sensible to just disable the turboboost in the balanced energy mode (e.g. day to day), and use turboboost when the application really needs it? (e.g. max performance mode when needed).

I've used the Shin Etsu thermal paste (or TIM - Thermal Interface Material as reviewers would like to call it) on the CPU (4940MX) and GPU (P5000) in my M6800. There are some improvements in the temperature department, but like you it wasn't that much of a difference but kept within specs.

However, what I noticed was although the max temp was slightly lower than before the system was now able to efficiently dissipate the heat away. Thermal protection measures never kicked in when stressing the system and the cooling fans never went off like a jet engine.

To me the TIM is doing its job. Unless you move on to liquid metal but that is something I will not touch with a ten foot pole.

IMHO, there is no benefit in disabling turbo boost in balanced energy mode. The speed boost usually lasts just a for a short period and doesn't cause the temperature to spike to high levels. I'll leave the settings to default and let the system handle it.

Thanks - very helpful. Left it as it is.

Used Artic MX2 previously - wasn't convinced it was helpful (so decided to get the decent thermal, open the system once, might as well use quality). Think Gelid GC3 is reasonably good as I can go (Thermal Grizzly Kryonuat looks harder to apply) without LM - workstation with LM slightly frightens me / and tbh M6800 isn't a system you want to reopen if you can help it. .

Impressive system you have there (especially the P5000 upgrade)

I agree on that part where you said "tbh M6800 isn't a system you want to reopen if you can help it". The keyboard ribbon that connects to the motherboard and the other flimsy ribbons that connect the other bits to the motherboard are a hassle!
