Interesting. Perhaps you can route a TV antenna cable through one of the back ports?

Just poking in to write that I finally tried the second 1/2 mini slot and it works fine for me... I am playing with different Wi-Fi adapters and I have an extra one at the moment, so I hooked it up in there with the extra WWAN antenna leads. Windows recognizes it as a second Wi-Fi adapter and I can connect to networks with no hassle.

Not sure what I would need a second Wi-Fi adapter for, other than at the moment when I will be running some bandwidth comparisons between the two adapters. Maybe I will set one to 5 GHz only so that the machine will stop trying to connect to my access point at 2.4 GHz.

mSATA will only work in a mSATA slot — it is physically identical to mPCIe but it is a SATA device and not a PCI device.

However I'm surprised if the USB-to-PCIE adapter did not work. Maybe they only have USB hooked up to the "primary" mPCIe slot. (mPCIe slots allow for a PCI connection and a USB connection... Some cards use only one or the other, and some use both, like Wi-Fi+Bluetooth cards which have the Wi-Fi card hooked up via PCI and the Bluetooth component hooked up via USB.)

Maybe try putting the USB receiver there and moving the Wi-Fi card to the secondary slot?

one issue with the logitech receiver on my M6800 is it doesn't fit in the slot when it is attached to the usb to mPCIe board I ordered a spare receiver to dissemble and try to shrink it so it fits will report back
