M6700 1/2 Mini - for what?

Hello!
I got this week a used M6700. I opend the cover on the backside and saw a "slot" whot called 1/2 Mini. For what is this slot?
The specs about the slots of my M6700:
Intel 6205
No WWAN (but ordered)
No Bluetoth (but ordered)

Can anybody give me a info about this slot?

You can put in any half-size mini-PCIe card. There's not a lot of options that do not require an antenna connection (wifi card, WWAN, GPS, etc.). Here's one that allows you to mount two micro-SD cards for additional storage.

Originally, that slot was mean for the Dell encryption module. Like Aaron said, there aren't that many options. If I remember correctly, and I may not, there are also mPCIE to USB adapters out there where you "might" be able to cram a logitech mini receiver if you use a wireless mouse.

 

I tried a SSD the other day, no dice

 

The SSD was probably using the mSATA interface, is can have the same form factor as mPCI-E, but the pins are wired differently to the motherboard. In short, it fits physically, but electronically, it wasn't possible to have communication between the computer and the device.

Also, be careful, you will see some of these SSDs listed as mPCI-E because of the interface form factor, but they are mSATA drives. There are very few if any SSDs that actually use the mCPI-E form factor and spec. SSDs that use a PCI-E interface are usually NVMe drives these days. The form factor for those is completely different.

 

So you mean it is better to use only modules like GPS, WWAN and so on and not a SSD or this MR16 module (see the link above).

 

It should work with the MR16 as that is a PCIe card. Most SSDs that look like this are actually mSATA cards and not PCIe cards. (The connector is the same but the interface is actually different.) mSATA cards will not work in this slot.

 

The MR15 need a USB 2.0 (MiniCard 1.2) port....

Barring any weird edge cases, yes!

 

Hello! I bought this adapter (MR15), installed it and saw nothing.
No new device was found on my Computer (Win 7 Prof.). On the card a yellow LED is lighting and thats it. Any ideas whats the problem can be?
I installed the device correct (I checked the contacts between card and slot from the Dell) and fixed it with a screw.
