The newer hp don't have whitelist anymore.
I think the m6700 improve a bit on the hinge.
I like the hp elitebook look also, but dell was cheaper and a better "computer" overall. And the only gripe I have with the Dell is that dent on the top can be really noticeable as it is flat with no pattern w.e.

so you saying you love the notebook cause it is sexy? wow! well.. i get people have different eyes for everything .. thanks to those kind of great people ugly women can marry ;)

Dell is like toyotas ... they are ugly but everybody loves and buy them cause they are reliable ...

the used one choice was mainly based on
    1. Believe there is better chance to work on more GPU cards than HP
    2. HP has 2 different motherboards. Did not find many with 3 ram slots and even ones with quad were using 2 slots only. that would limit me a lot.
    3. whitelist. tired of whitelist crap
    4. no optimus on HP

the biggest upside on buying the HP was that the 8760W and 8770W shares the same boddy. so i could upgrade the motherboard. but then realized it would be a lot of money for the trouble (better just to sell and buy a newer model)

and as far as baii comment, although Dell is "cheaper" than HP new, i see it different on used. I guess Dell holds more value cause they cost more to buy used.

I agree, that is why it is my "own" first impression. i dont like colorful but dont like flat one drark color. and black it is hard to see. i often work on dark places. i guess that is why i am struggling to find it "pretty"

i guess for those who watch videos it may be great.

btw, i bought a new DC plug and hope that solve the only big issue with it. dont have high hopes as the current one did not look damaged

edit: looks like the bracket retainer is part of the base board.

About temperatures and underside of the notebook being hot. You dont need cooling pad, just make sure heatsinks are clean and paste is ok. Underside will always get warm/hot. If you want to use it in bed, just use a wooden plank, or some flat surface to keep your balls safe :)

Edit: and stop calling this notebook ugly. Its elegant, simple industrial design. :)

    You should stop trolling now...

You have made a purchase and come to a forum where we like our computers and are willing to help others with technical issues.
It is senseless to keep hammering at the very thing you are going to be looking at for some undetermined amount of time, otherwise you're beating a dead horse.

It is after all just a computer, there are many flavors available and surely one can be found that is more attractive and just as useful for your preferences.

PS: you need to go post 6874 and fix that quote you made as that wasn't all alexhawker's.

im a bit confused about who is trolling here .. i came and wrote my OWN first impression and you didnt like that i said it is ugly. so what? what is wrong about thinking a notebook is ugly? it never stopped me from buying it.

you sir started the analogy about women .. not me. i just wrote my impressions on positive and negative but you started and wont stop this subject. if you noticed, i moved on and talked about the purchase of the power cable.. but i guess you cant stop it because you dont agree it is ugly and feel anyone that says otherwise is wrong or a liar. i guess you are the one that wont get over with it ...

i never said i hated the dell or anything negative. you just, for some reason, got too upset that i said it is ugly. its my opinion and everybody has their own opinion. Coming from bay area where most companies buy Dells, i can say most think they are ugly. but .. never stop anyone from buying them.

now .. same thing i ask about toyotas i ask dell. does it really need to be ugly? it does not cost more to make it more appealing.

many people buy Apple just because they like how it looks.

and again, out of many positive things and few negatives, not sure why you had to focus on one negativity i mentioned.

when people buy things they take in consideration many factors and they rate the importance of the factors and make decisions.

funny as it may sound, i never had any consideration for look. so i rate it very low in my importance. it is more of the "nice to have good look"

importance for me was to be able to upgrade it (i was considering buying on i5 or i7 dual core at first and upgrade later). GPU compatibility (i researched a lot before buying)
and whitelist. i read the HP 8760 does have whitelist.

so those were my factors to purchase and i am happy with my purchase ... but as everybody has their first impression, my first impression was: damn it is ugly. hp is much prettier.
also damn it is much heavier than i thought it would be.

if it wasnt for you being soo upset about this comment of being ugly there would be no discussion, but i guess you wanted an discussion.

so check again who is trolling. Again. all i did was write my OWN first impression

and before i stop answering you .. look at dell forum from 2004!!! and its since then i think dells are not pretty. i am not alone and those guys share my thoughts exactly. dell needs to hire better designers. since 2004 nothing has been done really. (probably with exception of m2800 that from video does look pretty)
    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/5096015

people just take look into consideration, it wont stop people from buying because it is not the only reason people buy. but certainly Dell would improve a lot if improve in the design.

this site.. top ugly notebooks.. dell as #2
    http://smartparts.co.uk/blog/2008/02/top-5-ugly-laptops/

from this from about dell ... thinking dell is losing costumers to HP

    great specs, ugly design ...

"I had the M4500 and now its succesor, M4600. I prefer the design of old model much more. Ugly boxy design, speakers are tiny (I guess dell did it so in order to accomodate the num pad, too bad I don't use it...), ugly brownish color instead of gray in the old model , the lcd back cover is a fingerprint magnet and shows considerable flex. Appart from that it is a solid machine, but design-wise I think it's a step back."

so instead of trolling that dell is not ugly and complain someone posted his first impressions of the notebook was that it was ugly, you should take that as a costumer input. and sounds like the impression is shared with others.

so it was said.. well dell is cheaper than HP (from what i read it isnst true as people can call HP and get discount on CTO making it about the same price as dell). but.. what if it was the same price, same specs? look would sure come into consideration.

and to finish.. Again!!! saying it was ugly was just my freaking first impression!!!!! never stopped me from buying and wont affect what i feel about my notebook cause for me it is the least relevant aspect of my purchase criteria.

in a note: i cant buy toyotas no matter how reliable they are cause i just cant stand how ugly they are.

in this market (workstations) there isnt many options and for work laptop look is not ver important. being reliable is.

but for consumer, there are plenty of options out there people would sure put high value on appearance.

industrial design. you got it lol. that is what it looks :)
hopefully moving on the ugly/pretty argument ....

i do use laptop a lot while in the living room sitting (well more like laying) on a recliner. so i put it on my "belly". lol, i call it bellytop :)

for that it is pretty damn warm and hot. heatsinks are clean. that i checked. i didnt check the paste but i am thinking on repasting it once i open again to replace the DC plug.

what would be the normal (browsing web) temp for the i7-2860qm? and full load? i noticed the GPU wont get very hot only if i am running benchmarks (and i guess playing games that i wont play much) but still i even think it is not using its max capacity as it does not run very hot.
