Sorry to hear that happened to your brand new laptop. I hope you get it looking great again!

My unit does odd things sometimes: just yesterday I had a bluescreen after all my usb peripherals froze (Windows 8). The mouse cursor can sometimes end up on the bottom of the screen on its own. Deleting all usb devices solves that. I dunno if the usb controller has gone a bit wonky. I have reinstalled the OS twice already. I've given up trying to run Dell's U2711 monitor because of Displayport problems with that particular monitor. I also had a brief episode with 'power supply not recognised' but it resolved with a hard reset. Ironically, I have an old Fujitsu T5010 laptop running Windows 8 that is as stable as a rock.

I haven't called Dell because I'm not sure what to tell them: it's just these subtle weird things. Also, another M6600 user in my country who had problems says that Dell will likely offer a 6700 replacement, but as I depend on the digitizer a lot, I've decided to limp along for now and see how it goes.

Forgive me for being a party pooper, but that's just a description of my foibles. When the computer is on-song (most of the time) it's one fantastic machine.

Uh does anyone have a Service Manual for this thing? I can't find it anywhere on Dell's site.

Sounds to me like you have a misbehaving chipset driver, you could try the latest version available for series 6 laptop chipsets from Intel's site. I would install it via command line using the -overall command to overwrite everything. I can give you more details on how to work the command line interface if you need. You could also try the latest version that Dell offers for the M6600. If you have USB 3.0 ports, also reinstall the drivers for that controller.

For the mouse cursor, remove the rubber cap on the trackpoint and check if there's anything stuck near it. I've seen some trackpoints "drift" on older Thinkpads after some prolonged use.

Thank you! I will explore these options if it misbehaves again (so far so good for 24hrs now - knock wood, fingers crossed). Very much appreciated.

    Thanks for this :)

The BIOS category had gone missing for a couple weeks over there and I'd wondered what was up.

Did you get a chance to try it yet?

Updated from a13, don't notice difference except the post screen on external monitor is no longer full screen.

    Thanks Baii!

I'll backup and install it in a couple of days if I don't hear anything more negative by then.

I'm on a UEFI setup which hopefully should have even less worry, but I still do.
