    Hello,

I'm a proud (and young) owner of a Precision M6600, I love it.

I have a question about overheating...
You see, I've melted down several latptops in the past, none of them could even begin to compare to my Precision, and they were not professional tools, but it got me a bit paranoid.
This is why there has always been a notebook cooler under my Precision everytime I've been working with it.
But now I'm seriously considering buying a docking station, which clearly would need to replace any extra cooler underneath the laptop, and it worries me.

Have I been underestimating my laptop untill now, and is my Precision will be more than capable of not overheating under whatever stress i'm putting it through without an extra cooling pad ?

My typical work use of it is having 2 screens plugged in the back, lid of the laptop closed.
One is running any kind of live 3d platforms (goes from game we are developing, or just some visual environment running), the other is usually where I put my of development tools (photoshop and/or maya, etc..).
Will that be ok without the extra cooling pad ?

I apologise for my english, not my first language, and also the fact that my question might sound stupid :)

That is exactly how I use my M6600 almost every day. You will not need a bottom cooler since the back half of the system is elevated at approx. 5°.

The robust internal heatsinks and dual fans design will handle anything you throw at the system. That is one of the numerous benefits from investing in a business class solution.

    Scott-

Thanks for your reply Scott, that puts my worries to rest, and I'll definately buy a docking station then.

On that note, I've noticed there are two different "advanced" one, a 130w and a 240w version, what reasons would make me want to buy one more than the other ?

If you are gonna use the CPU and GPU in any intensive manner at the same time, you'll fry that 130W PSU.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm getting a bit confused with all these different docking station tho.
I understand now that the AC adapter has nothing to do with the port replicator itself (so I need a 210w/240w, ok).

I know I also want the "plus" or sometimes labelled "advanced" one, as I need the 2 dvi/display ports.
What I don't get is that, for the same price, some apparently supports USB 3.0, when for others it's not specified, and they seem to only have 2 usb ports (I can count at least 5 in Scott's picture).
The problem I can see is that the ones that supports USB 3.0 seem to be only compatible with the M6700, and not M6600, is that correct ?
So there is no way to have a port recplicator that supports USB 3 for the M6600 ?

And finally, to complicate everything a little more, I was actually looking at buying the docking station on Amazon.co.uk, because let's face it, they usually offer much more competitive prices than dell.com (for the same product). But on Amazon, I couldn't find any of them explicitly saying they support USB 3.0, and they're all the same model named : PR02X - K09A, which doesn't correspond to anything I could see from the dell.com website.

Could anyone straighten things up for me a little ? :)

    -Ben

Welp, mine m6600 will be here on Tuesday to replace my old Toshiba Qosmio that has served me well.

Mine is fairly bare bones as I'll be adding most of the bits I want (Bluray, 32gb memory etc) as the build in price on those were a tad to high for my cheapness.

I am going to start poking around in this thread but one thing I was wondering, if anyone has a good tear down video or web page with pictures etc ? Found a few on youtube but where not overly complete or well done.

Something else I am wondering is, is the heat sink/fan for the FirePro the same as for the nVidia Quadro cards ? I would like to upgrade when I can swing the cash in the future. ( I mostly edit video but as a hobby )

Something odd about the Docks, they seem to block the HDMI port and they don't have HDMI's on the docks :/

any who, thanks for pointing me in the right direction

    -Robert
