The lid is attached to the LCD, and if you have not worked on a laptop, be careful,

    Dear All

    Sorry to bump

Just ordered a new dell m6600 with 8 Gb 1600 mhz ram installed (still waiting for delivery) does any one know what the CL speed is I wish to purchase an extra 8 Gb to match.

I have ordered some extra memory from Dell spares and looking at the part number it has CL 11 11 11 but cost £80.00 approx.(just arrived)

    Looking at Kingston HyperX Plug and Play 8GB (2x4GB) 1600MHz - KHX1600C9S3P1K2/8G similar price but CL 9 9 9 .

Does any one know if the kingston will fit as it has heat strips and why the installed memory from dell is so expensive £250.00 compared to after market memory circa £80.00.?

    Thanks for the help.

PS I have ordered the new IPS Screen

CL 11 @ 1600MHz is not worth the upgrade cost and would not perform better than CL9 @ 1333MHz. Try to get some decent CL9 @ 16000MHz and do not pay more than US$60 for 8GB or US$120 for 16GB. Yes, most memory with the heat spreaders will fit, but they are more for looks than function (in my opinion). I have really grown fond of the G.Skill memory as it simply works well, has good timing, comes with a lifetime warranty and is a great value. I see no difference using this memory compared to the Samsung, Kingston, or Micron sticks.

    Here is a good deal: Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSQ

    or with the heat spreaders: Newegg.com - G.SKILL 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model F3-12800CL9D-8GBSK

Dell just likes to charge a premium for hardware that is much cheaper via third party vendors. I would return that memory you just received and look elsewhere.

    Hello Scott

Thank you for the reply, I now will be sending back the 8 Gb of CL11 1600 MHz purchased from Dell spare parts and purchasing some new 1600MHz CL9 from another supplier.

Just one more question, as I have ordered with the Dell m6600 8 Gb of 1600MHz pre-installed do you know what the CL rating is ? And if it is, say CL 11 as suspected is it worth changing it to the secondary memory slots and using the new 1600 Mhz CL9 memory for the main memory slots ? or cut my losses and replace the dell Supplied memory (that came with the M6600) and purchase new 16Gb 1600MHz CL9.

    Regards Clive

Thank you for the links (but in the UK), but understand your point sellers in the UK sell at around the same cost say £80.00 = $80.00 slightly more costly over in the UK if you take the exchange rate but i have found £1 = $1.00 when making comparisons.

I know this info is in this thread somewhere but I can't find it.

Is there a way to find out the display manufacturer without booting the computer?

Hmm, I know after booting but before booting no..

The BIOS information is pretty limited.. I assume you are looking for a program you can boot into..

How about trying Ubuntu from a USB and checking from there?

Well, it depeneds on the source of the system you receive, but every system we have received here in the USA comes with the CL9 @ 1333MHz as ordered. I have not ordered any systems with the Dell installed 1600MHz memory so I cannot say what they include in that regards. Because of the better third party prices, I just order the least amount of memory with the systems and replace it with my matched memory once the systems arrive.
I can help you get the memory from the USA if you want to save some money (having lived in Germany, I know how much more things can be on that side of the pond).

Any of you folks found a decent case that will accomodate the M6600 and provide a modicum of toughness?
