It seemed to be popular in some of the Q1 2011 consumer XPS 15 and 17 systems although I have not checked recently. I think HP is also making it an option in their Envy line. It is possible the 2630QM is the "newer" default starting point in Q2/Q3.

I am trying to go through the Lacie manuals, datasheets, and knowledge bases. Not seeing a lot of good info.

I do see that there is a mode that will allow you to do software raid on a Mac. This software raid mode would require the PM eSata to work. It could very well be that you just need to change the raid mode on the Lacie drive to one that is compatible with the eSata on the M6400/M6600.

One thing the manuals did say is that changing the mode on the Lacie destroys all the data on the Lacie. Any info on how you have the Lacie would be helpful. Not doubting your issues. Just trying to figure them out.

Its getting late. Will pick this back up tomorrow.

Its 11:40 here, so the Lacie reading will be tapering off soon.

Seeing lots of reviews showing that the Lacie 4big quadra only works best with Lacie eSata cards. Looks like it could be a power issue. The port multiplier might not matter unless the Lacie was in Mac os raid mode. It could all nust be that the Lacie is "picky" about what is on the other end of the cable.

It is RAID 5 with ~1.5TB of data that could be moved should resetting the raid be needed to solve the eSata problem. Looks like I'll owe you a drink or two after this.

Guys, I somewhere found a picture from dell showing possible external monitor configurations on M6600 and M4600. I cannot find it again. Do anybody know a link?

BTW if anyone can try setting HDD passwords and let them fill by the fingerprint reader that would be very helpful.

Just to keep you informed - changed the cable, and tried my WD again. No joy :(

And I'm really p..'ed off, as the latest full backup to this drive via fiwi took some awfully long 6 hours to complete! With eSATA, it would be 2 at the max... Not to mention my video sources (with data rate of up to 280 Mbps) will not play as smoothly during edits (especially when I have several of them in the timeline).

I found an older posting from 2009 where someone had the Lacie working with the M6400, but the transfer speeds were really low. 1-2 mb/sec. Specs look close enough to yours that I thought I would ask if that was your post.

"I am getting eSata transfer rates of _1-2MB/s_.

Lacie 4 Big Quadra 4TB (4x1TB) configured by Lacie as RAID 5 with
    _expected_200-220MB/s_ via eSata.

    Hardware and OS:
*Dell Precision M6400 Mobile Workstation (factory configured): QX9300
    (Intel quad core, 12MB cache), 16GB (DDR3-1066), *FX3700M (1GB), 17"
    WUXGA RGB-LED (Samsung, 1920x1200), *1TB RAID 0 (2x ST9500420ASG), *2MP
Camera, Dual array microphones, Dell 410 Ultra Wide Band/Bluetooth,
    Intel 5300 a/g/n, CD-DVD (+/-RW GS20N), Backlit keyboard,
    *_Vista_Ultimate_64-bit_*, Coolslice, E/Port Plus 210W Port Replicator,
    Dell UltraSharp 3008WFP 30"

All hardware is top of the line and after many hours to both Dell and
Lacie tech support pointing fingers at each other they are now saying OS
is the problem (nobody likes Vista!).

Since I have had the Lacie box (~$1000) over 30 days vendor will not
accept return and Lacie says nothing wrong with their product (they
shipped me a replacement and same problem) - yes this has gone on for a
longgg time ... and I am running out of time.

Note that 2 internal HD are RAID 0.

    Intel(R) ICH8M-E/ICH9M-E SATA RAID Controller
    Intel, Driver version: 8.8.0.1009
    Date: 2/11/2009

    Any suggestions, Please ...

    1. Get a notebook SATA drive, connect it to the eSATA port, and seehow fast

    1. Get a notebook SATA drive, connect it to the eSATA port, and see
    how fast data transfers.
    2. Connect notebook SATA drive inside of laptop, install Windows XP on
it, and see how fast data transfers to the Lacie."

On another, more positive, note: today when my Vegas Pro was rendering video using 100% of all 8 threads of my i7-2920XM, I launched CPU-Z and to my amazement, saw some 2.99 GHz clock speed, with multiplier at 30. So, is the 2920-XM really capable of almost 3GHz on all 4 cores, or is CPU-Z lying? Of course, didn't do anything to crank the clock up...

I thought the Turbo Boost mode only applies to a single core!

The 2920XM is capable of turbo frequencies of up to 3.5GHz on 1 core, 3.4GHz on 2 cores, or 3.2GHz on 3 or 4 cores, depending on temperature and power consumption. My theory (although I haven't yet substantiated it) is that part of the reason it has a 10w higher TDP than the other quad core i7s even though the clockspeed is only very, very marginally higher is to allow it to spend more time at its turbo frequencies than say, a 2820QM would. That's actually the major reason I bought the 2920 instead of the 2820.

Yep that's one of my configs that I tried to get eSata working on M6400. At one stage (I think it was Win 7 Enterprise 64-bit with RAID 1) I got better transfers but eSata was always a problem. Another time when motherboard was replaced eSata port did not work at all.

Returning to M6600, it does not see Lacie at all (see recent posts and images) when using M6600 eSata. But using EC eSata card everything is good.
