Yes I can connect 3 monitors, but will at least 2 of them display individual extended desktops simultaneously with the internal LED as the primary desktop?

I definitely don't think the Quadro is capable of that all by itself (even the highest graphics card in desktops only can drive 2 monitors) - the only possibility is that somehow the Intel CPU-integrated graphics can help... But that's pure speculation, and I need to know for sure today :)

Oh, and BTW - if the Quadro 4000M is indeed capable of that, is it Dell-exclusive or can other high-end laptops (like the HP EliteBook 8760w with i7-2929XM) do the same?

Thanks a lot, this makes it clear. Again - is this also available on comparable systems from other vendors (like the HP 8760w), or is Dell an exception in this regard?

The competition, HP, does not offer Optimus and this technology is how NVIDIA is able to do this.

After a bit more experience, I now notice that my external monitor randomly goes black (but still has power) every now and then, even on my "first" docking station. It is almost as if the video signal is cutting out. I have read about random flickering when playing a flash video in Chrome, but I have fixed that by turning off hardware acceleration in the flash properties window. So, this other flickering that I am seeing happens regardless of flash content. (It also made no difference to update the bios to A04).

    It's good to know, thanks.

Actually, I'd appreciate it if you guys helped me with some more arguments like this. I realize this is a Dell forum, so opinions may be biased - but I'm just trying to make my mind definitely between:

    - the M6600, 16GB of 1600MHz memory, 128GB minicard +2x 750GB HDDs, Quadro 4000M, 2920XM, and

    - the HP 8760w, 16GB of 1333MHz memory, 128GB SSD +2x 500GB HDDs (no optical drive!!!), Quadro 4000M, 2920XM

I'm a Dell user for years, but some people advise for the HP... The Optimus and multi-monitor support is a very important advantage for the Precision, but I'm looking for more pros and cons :)

    TIA

    Piotr

Also, you have consider the optimus question with an IPS screen.

Currently, if you choose nvidia and don't choose an IPS screen, Dell will support optimus (almost doubling battery life). This combination (or any) on the HP will not support optimus currently.

Dell IPS + nvidia on the m6600 may not support optimus either (it does not on the m4600 so I would expect the same behavior).

If you choose IPS and or the AMD card, then both are likely to have same answer for battery life except for the fact that HP offers slice batteries for extended life whereas Dell does not.

So there a couple of sets of comprises you have to consider this generation of these machines.
