2.5" is the size of a standard laptop HD, 3.5 is a desktop HD, I don't know what 1.8 is, but none of those are msata. I think your options are fairly limited for msata.

I don't agree - what's the point of a workstation (even if only mobile), if the CPU is underpowered?

I guess the 2820 is the sweet spot. Has 8 MB cache just like the 2920XM, but should run cooler (and hence the laptop will be quieter). This is what I'm getting, and I really am going to do some number-crunching as well as serious video editing!

no, but if the hard drive or ram fails you'll have to go back to the shop you bought them from to replace them yourself under warranty

The 128GB mSATA SSD might be a Samsung, which has very solid reviews. You cannot buy this currently since it is only available for OEMs.

I understand wanting the 2720 or above if you want quad - core but the poster was asking if there was advice on what he could change.

So that being said the best price/performance is what he was asking about. The 2630 would be the best option but is not offered in the 4600 so the 2720 would be most economical option.

As most will say (not all), very few applications take advantage of the processor speed in the higher end Sandybridge processors. The graphics applications that people use this for (maya, or autocad etc) are more likely to use the GPU than the CPU. Or more cores in the CPU, in which case yes, the 2720 vs 2540/2620 will be better. But the cost for the 2820 and 2920 is largely unjustified unless it will save you time in your work which makes you $$$.

However, otherwise, the price difference for additional megahertz will largely be wasted.

You're right: 'SAMSUNG SSD PM810 mSATA' says the device manager :)

Together with the 500 gig Toshiba HD it makes a very compelling combo. Lightroom feels instantaneous with a 250GB raw image collection on Disk and cache, data base etc. on SSD. I am very pleased with the M4600.
