Same here haven't had any luck with the m4600 I'm aiming to get and would like a good rep, but im also trying to just get slightly stripped down version to keep cost down. Only upgrades looking to get is bluetooth, backlit keyboard, 1080 screen, and camera so prob won't get much of discount.

Just ordered my M6600 - got a pretty good deal calling the rep:

    i7-2820QM
    8 GB 1333 RAM (2 DIMMS)
    Slot-load DVD
    AMD FirePro M8900
    FHD 1920x1080 display (non-touch screen)
    Vid. Camera
    2 - 128GB SATA3 SSDs
    Bluetooth
    Intel N6300 Wi-Fi
No Broadband (waiting for Novatel chip for Verizon 4G)
    No finger print reader
3 year Pro Support NBD + 3 year accidental protection

    TOTAL MSRP = $4297
    Web site price ($622 discount) = $3675
Phone price = $3313 - which is about 23% off MSRP
    Free shipping
    Tax extra

Not quite as good as some people report on HPs (up to 25-28% off MSRP), but certainly better than website price.

The sales rep is Steven Shipe - [email protected]

    Est. ship date 6/21

I was able to get 28% but that includes a free warranty upgrade after purchase. Pre-purchase, the rep had given me 25%. My system total pre-purchase before discounts was $4620 though.

What do you mean by "size"? According to Dell's online configurator it's a 128GB mini card, so going by my experience with the M6500 it's the same form factor like a Mini-PCIe WLAN module.

Would anyone have feedback on the following spec's. I am looking for a laptop to run Revit, 3DStudioMax, and Adobe software.

    M4600
    Windows® 7 Professional 64-bit
i7-2920XM Extreme Quad Core 2.50GHz,8M cache
    Memory 16.0GB, DDR3-1600MHz SDRAM, 4 DIMMS
    Backlit Keyboard
    Graphics NVIDIA® Quadro® 2000M with 2GB GDDR3
Primary Storage 128GB Solid State Minicard Drive
Secondary Storage 256GB (SATA2) Mobility Solid State Drive
    Non-RAID
    LCD 15.6" UltraSharp™ FHD(1920x1080) PremierColor IPS RGB Anti-Glare LED-backlit
    Bluetooth Dell Wireless
Media Bay Devices 8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load
    Camera / Microphone
Wireless LAN (802.11) + WiMAX 6250 Half Mini Card
    Primary Battery 9-cell (97Wh)
    Energy Star 5.0
Additional Monitor 24" Wide Screen P2411H 16:9 Ratio, Energy Star

    MSRP around $6,000

Are any of these specifications overkill- I wanted to get a 256gb solid state primary storage and 500GB secondary normal hard drive but if you request two hard drives in the m4600 the primary storage needs to be 128gb solid state mini card for space limitations and then any size secondary hard drive. Any thoughts on going with a secondary 500gb hard drive oppose to the secondary 256gb solid state?
I would have liked to go with the additional monitor with 16:10 ratio but there are no Energy Star dell monitors with 16:10 ratio. The energy star monitor uses about 60% less energy then the ultra sharp.

    Any recommendations would be great-

The processor is overkill unless you are really using an app that can take advantage of it. Drop to any of the Sandybridge's and you are fine (2540, 2620, 2720). Personally, anything over the 2620 is a waste.

The SSDs should NEVER be bought from Dell. You will save at least $600 installing those yourself from Newegg or amazon or whatever -- just don't buy them from dell unless they give you at least a 40% discount to bring it into line with non-sale prices of other vendors.

Buy the lowest amount of ram possible from Dell. This will save you a huge amount too. You can install it yourself. And unless you are running VMs or doing huge photo / video file transfers/edits nothing will take advantage of anything over 8gb much less 4gb.

Also, I think that the additional monitor you chose would be something to reconsider. Either buy the U2411, U2711 or U3011 for consumer purposes or if you are a photo editor type go look at the panels from Eizo or NEC or LaCie.

I partially disagree. The 2920 is probably too much but I would get the 2720 (or the 2820 which isn't much more). Anything below that only supports 2 DIMMs and slower ram speeds. Like he said, RAM and HD can both be easily upgraded post purchase.

I purchased the minicard on my M4600 to avoid the hassle of having to find a msata card that was compatible and having to reinstall windows on it but for the secondary drive, I chose the cheapest one so I could upgrade myself. The secondary drive is shipped empty so there is no need to transfer anything, all you have to do is unplug and replace. I bought a $5 USB 3.0 enclosure and put the HD that was originally in my M4600 into it to use as an external.

    Good Morning,

    Look here:
    SATA II OCZ Technology

There are 3 sizes available: 1.8", 2.5"... That's defintitive size. I assume it's 1.8"? Also sizes from 1.0" to 1.3" are available...
So which size shouls the mini SSD have to fit this place like a Mini-PCIe module?

Looking for SSD with Mini-PCIe connection i find only a max. 64GB SSD... Not very quick too...

    Best, Walter
