    Hi All,

Can anyone help me configure my M6600. If I take only one hard drive to begin with (500Go - 7200rpm for instance) with RAID for 1 disk, will I be able to add a second hard drive SSD later on?

Another question, is there much difference between Quadro 3000M and 4000M.

My main use is Revit, Photoshop and Cubase 5

    Thanks.

Got a vmail from Dell yesterday saying that my order was 'downloaded incorrectly' so, it had to be cancelled and reordered but not to worry because they have taken care of it for me. Unfortunately, it pushed by delivery date out 22 days to 6/28 (originally ordered on 5/9 with a delivery date of 6/6).

    Anyone else get this call/email?

Seems a bit absurd that I need to wait an extra 22 days because of their error, eh.

I originally posted this in another forum but I thought I would post it here, too. I would really be interested in everyone's personal experience and advice. As I once mentioned earlier in this thread, I use my computer mostly for modelling and troubleshooting multi-tier applications as well as for "normal" business and office work, especially on long flights. "Horsepower," memory and storage are important to me, as I will often be running multiple virtual machines on my computer, but a high-end display is not (as long as I can play an occasional FHD, Blu-ray movie on it).

I was originally planning on purchasing an HP Elitebook 8760w but when their availability was delayed by a month or so, I started to look at the Dell Precision M6600. To my surprise, I think I actually prefer the Dell!

I have had many HP laptops over the years, both professionally and personally, and all of them have been good, reliable computers. Nothing "fancy" for the most part -- although some have been "monsters" in their day -- but I've never had any real problems with them. So obviously, I was looking at HP for my next one.

But when the new, Sandy Bridge-based HP portable workstations were delayed, I started to look at the Dells. With just a couple of exception, the Dells seem to have everything the HPs have and more. Advantages of the Dells over the HPs include:

    (1) Bluetooth 3.0 on the Dells vs. 2.1+EDR on the HPs
    (2) Optimus is supported with the Nvidia cards on the Dells but not on the HPs
    (3) SATA-3 is supported on the Dells but not on the HPs
    (4) The Dells are slightly smaller and lighter than the corresponding HPs.

Except for the Optimus support, most people probably don't think most of the Dell advantages are that significant but still. As for the advantages of the HP over the Dells, the only things I could find are:

    (1) A slightly larger extended battery available with the HP (100Wh) than with the Dells (97Wh).
    (2) An additional battery slice is available with the HP (100Wh) while one is not currently available with the Dell yet.

Basically, the possible advantages of the HP over the Dell comes down to potential battery life but I am thinking that the use of Optimus with the Dell may partially ameliorate this advantage.

The only reason I have not pulled the trigger on the Dell yet is because of my fears about the build quality. To anyone who has had both a Dell Precision workstation-class laptop and an HP Elitebook workstation laptop, how would you compare the quality of each and what would you get now and why?

Build quality or reliability? The thing about laptops is that they all break. I've owned many different brands of laptops over the years, and had some issues with almost every single one of them. In my opinion, the most important thing with laptops is to have a good warranty. Dell's on-site Pro support has always been great in my experience: if something goes wrong with my laptop: a Dell-contracted technician would come to my office and replace the broken part in no time. For that thing alone, I am now very loyal to Dell!

    @m4600, thanks!

I'm leaning more and more towards the Dell. I really can't say anything bad about HP -- again, my experience with them has been great -- but the Dell seems to be a little bit more of what I want. If only I could also get a +90Wh battery slice with it. :D

And it really is both build quality and reliability I am after. More the latter but I also don't want a laptop that feels "cheap" even if it lasts forever with no problems.

Thanks again for your reply. Any other advise?

Can anyone comment on the power use difference between a IPS and non-IPS screen? All others being equal.

Jup, I think you are alking about me. I talked to my sales rep. and he condirmed that there was a prob. With my order. He confirmed it again. New order date 24th of June. (from9th of June).

This is UNACCEPTABLE for me! If this will not change I will cancel my order and say good bye to Dell and ait for the HP to come up with a good one.

I am really really pissed at Dell right now. After 2 weeks they cancel my order without even noticing me...what a service...

if it helps anyone in a similar situation ... i called this morning and they offered me priority shipping and a $100 discount for the delay/trouble ... you should be able to get the same if you don't mind the hassle of calling ... good luck.
