Ugh, only after a month of ownership my M4800 has started to receive battlescars - the powder coating on the bottom panel is starting to rub away, turning the matte finish in to a shiny one. :(

I've said this before, but these machines would really benefit from more durable surface treatments - my E6540 had the more durable power coat by far.

The hard drive brands vary depending on their supply, which can change on a regular basis. It might be Western Digital, Seagate, Hitachi, etc. I mean between the SSD, SSHD, HDD, and various sizes they might easily have a 100 different parts for a certain model. Which one will you get? Who knows... but honestly, probably not all that important these days. :) And it's something you'll see with just about any large OEM. Pretty typical.

I've actually had quite a few Dell Latitude and Precision notebooks and haven't personally had any issues with wear like that. They just go from desk to desk, in docks, in/out of bags, etc. What kind of use does your system go through?

Mine is doing pretty will (had it since late last year) - showing a little wear on the front and rear corners (the shortest edges), but that's about it.

I dinged up one of the rear vent grills too, but have gotten a much better laptop carrying bag since.

Ditto on the docked at work to home on the coffee table and back via bags.

Same as you, though I use a laptop stand at home.

I've had/used a E6410, E6320 and E6540. This is the first time this has happened to me - I'll try and take a photo and post it here later. It's an expensive machine so to see this so quickly is disheartening.

EDIT: Just realised when I tilted the display to 180* earlier, it's stripped off the anodisation on the display cover - really not having a good day today.

That sucks. My ocd would have a problem with that. Even cosmetic I'd have Dell replace those parts.

Yeah, it's really triggering my inner OCD as well, I can't stand it. I really doubt I would get anywhere with asking for a parts replacement; most likely answer would be 'it's only cosmetic and doesn't affect the performance so deal with it'.

Finish completely stripped away, I've tried cleaning it with a damp kitchen paper towel to no avail just to double check it isn't some residue.

This is a little trickier to see and photograph but the matte powdercoat is starting to wear.

Yeah, I'm not seeing any of that, though like I said before, I've lost some paint along the lower front and rear corners, but that seems to be about it. I'm starting to get a shiny spot on the touchpad where I use my index finger most, but that doesn't bother me too much either.

I totally didn't realize the screen went that far back (just tried it) - mine seemed to have a tiny bit of resistance to going further at ~120 degrees open, so I hadn't pushed it, but that seems to have disappeared after opening it fully one time.

Do you do a lot of rendering and/or simulation that would benefit from a beefier CPU? I'm a solidworks user so my terminology may be a bit off for autocad.
