    Hi,
Did anyone try to put 680m or 780m in precision m4800 ?
Maybe safer is to buy m6800? I would like to swap vga from the beginning.

Ok thanks, I dug up something funny and realized what are the 2 remaining SATA slots for one of them as it appears our "1/2 MC PP" Capture.JPG Half card.

    Here are two links.

First one is rather funny, it has an option of using the sd micro cards as SSD substitute (may work for linux) link limted to usb 2.0 speed so 25-30mb/s at max speed :) MR15 (Dual Micro SD Cards to Mini PCIe.jpg

Second link is example of half mini SSD card that has decent ratings and sits on SATA 6Gbps. index.jpg

I am glad I am not the only one not feeling content, unless all the "holes@laptop" ;) are filled up with usefull ... devices.

(CORRECTION/ UPDATE) Slot is not usable as aditional drive two remaining ESATA interfaces appears to be external. Machine has only 3 internal SATA interfaces.

Confused on below configuration option for the M4800 ... need help deciding ...

So, on the Dell configuration page for the M4800 there is a Chassis Option listed of:
"Non FIPS with No Smartcard Reader Base ..."

    1. What is meant by "FIPS" and therefore what does Non-FIPS mean?
    2. The other Option listed is just "SmartCard Base", so I guess it has FIPS ?

    3. I do not need SmartCard, but what do I lose if I choose the "Non FIPS with No Smartcard Reader base ?

I believe the FIPS is the fingerprint swipe sensor.

Got my SSD for my M4800, figure I'll just fresh install on the SSD. What's in the default SSHD's recovery partition? Nothing important? Because I'm considering just wiping everything and going from there.

FIPS is a government standard for encryption, which in this case usually indicates a more expensive fingerprint reader.
Smartcard readers aren't used in the US much outside of secure facilities, such as some government sites. But you would use it as another method to login or access the PC.

I usually tell folks if they don't know what it is, they probably don't need it. :)

    Thanks ... omegafiler, alexhawker

BTW, ... Does anyone know of there is also a Dell Link to a "fully configurable" Latitude - E6540 page where youcan fully choose all the options in each category, just like the existing page for the fully configurable M4800 where you can choose all the hard drive options (instead of just the "smart ready to ship config.) ?

Not that I've seen in a long time. You may try calling the small business sales department.

Non FIPS with No Smartcard Reader Base means: No fingerprint reader, no contact smartcard reader, no contactless smartcard reader.

FIPS will include contact smartcard reader, contactless smartcard reader and the FIPS fingerprint reader, on which you can place your whole finger for authentication.

This is the FIPS certified fingerprint reader:
    20140528_180331.jpg

The other fingerprint reader option is SWIPE, which is a thin fingerprint reader strip on which you would need to 'swipe' your finger for authentication.

I don't see SWIPE listed as an option on the M4800, so I believe the FIPS fingerprint reader would be included on the SmartCard Base.

I believe the Smartcard Base is always part of the system, if there's a fingerprint reader installed on the device.
