Help with an msata drive. I want this to run as a second hard drive with it's own drive letter. I am a total rookie with installing one of these. I installed the drive, set the bios to AHCI, and booted. THe computer recognized new device, did some install stuff, asked to reboot. I cannot get the drive to show up. What did I goof up?

In device manager, it's listed and working, but doesn't show up as drive letter.

Can you right click on it and assign a letter to it?

Glad to hear it's working. What brand/size did you get?

In Reference to my post #641: http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell-latitude-vostro-precision/736032-m4800-owners-thread-65.html#post9617993 - my M4800-Optimization is successful.

    Memory-upgrade:
    Original: Dell/Samsung 2x4GB CL11
    Original XTU-Score: 648 Points (Benchmark)

    Optimized: Kingston 4x8GB CL9
    Optimized XTU-Score: 735 Points

    Result: 13,4% more CPU-Performace,
even more as the CPU is so fast,
that the CPU hits the "Turbo Boost Short Power Max"-Limit
and Power-Limit-Throtteling are cutting the result of XTU-Score.
It also feels like more than 13,4%.

    SSD-upgrade:
    Original: Dell/Samsung 500GB hybrid
    as-ssd-bench ST500LM0 00-1EJ1 13.04.2014 13-01-35.png

Optimized: Samsung 1000GB SSD 840 EVO
    as-ssd-bench Samsung SSD 840 13.04.2014 16-36-15.png

    Results:
    Seq.-Read: 2134% faster
    Seq.-Wirte: 1016% faster
    Access time read: 40040% faster
    Access time write: 149783% faster
But maybe a part of the results may be related to the Samsung SSD-drivers and -software.

    CPU-Repaste:
    Original: Tmax=86 deg Celsius, Startjump=26 deg, Enddrop=20 deg, Fan-Level: 0&1&2
    CTest_D_old_1_2_003.png
    Optimized: Tmax=82 deg Celsius, Startjump=15 deg, Enddrop=12 deg, Fan-Level: 0&1
    CTest_D_new_1_2_003_2.png

Results: 4 to 9 deg. colder and less fan noise.

    RAM-Conclusion:
The orinigal Samsung-RAM seams to be quiet slow.
I'm impressed by the fast user interface experience based on 32GB/CL9.
Upgrade was easy with the M4800 user manual,
but it's better to first install 16GB and BIOS-test it and than
the next 16GB and BIOS-test it,
as my M4800 did not directly accepted 32GB in one upgrade-step.

    SSD-Conclusion:
Upgrade was easy with the M4800 user manual and
with the Samsung clone-software on CD
and with the external sata-port (between VGA and HDMI).
The numbers on the screenshot are telling the story
    (it is realy breathtaking fast).
Windows performance index: 7,9 (original: 5,9)
18 Sec. boottime, 10 Sec, shutdown

    Repaste-Conclusion:
Repaste was difficult even with the M4800 user manual.
Maybe 30 screws and very tiny conectors.
I needed a big magnifier, a good small magnetic screwdriver (phillips)
and about 2 hours of work.
I used cellotape to protect the electrical enviroment from the conduction paste (coollaboratory pro). Not for beginners! But I need and love a cool & quiet notebook.

I got the FHD screen with the AMD card and 4700 processor. I went with the 256gb ssd and added the crucial 480mb (or something like that) msata. Still setting up so I haven't had much time on it yet. It all seems to work. The screen isn't great, as I do see a bit of the screen door deal going on, but it's way better than what I came from, so it's all relative. I just didn't want to deal with qhd compatability issues. I use this for work, so I don't have time for the growing pains. I'll report more once I get a better sense of it.

What is it with M4800 supporting 1866-MHz RAM if Haswell (and QM87?) can only go up to 1600 MHz for RAM? What am I missing? Is that some kind of future-proofing?
And why only 16GB maximum for 1866-MHz RAM?

BTW, 1866-MHz CL11 will be clocked at CL10 at 1600-MHz, so I suppose it would actually run slower than 1600-MHz CL9 memory…?

Information according to Dell Article ID: 644637
    Date Published: 2014-03-17
    | Dell Netherlands Antilles/Curaçao

    Memory Types: DDR3L-1333 or DDR3L-1600
    ARK | Intel® Core

"Due to availability, 1866 MHz RAM may be substituted for 1600 MHz RAM. The system will automatically throttle the Front Side Bus speed to 1600 MHz."

"Systems that have compatible 1866 MHz RAM installed will function normally but the memory speed will report 1600 MHz. This is working per the system design."

On the other hand Dell offers 1866MHz RAMs for the M4800 at the configuration page
for about 50 extra dollars per 8GB.
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=cupmws4800w7p&model_id=precision-m4800-workstation&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04

If you click on the "Learn More - Help Me Choose"-Link,
    you can read this statement.

    "1600 or 1866?
Memory for Dell Precision™ mobile workstations is available in two different speeds: 1600MHz or 1866MHz. 1600MHz memory offers good performance. 1866MHz memory runs faster and therefore can help provide a performance boost. Power users or customers who want the utmost performance should choose 1866MHz memory."

But analysing this link point to M4700 and M6700.
    ...hmc-precision-memory-m4700-m6700...

Most 1866MHz memory is rated CL9 at 1600MHz.
