You should be able to order the machine with 8GB of ram and install 8 more yourself. It's quite easy to do and will save you a little. Same goes for the SSD, assuming you're comfortable installing windows.

OK i've been informed my swap came through, must go unwrap it, sniff fresh plastic, pray like mantis, boot it up and see if it works like it should. will report my findings.

    My spec list:

    M4800
4900MQ,32GB-RAM,256SSD,3200x1800 res. (although they call it QHD its not really quad HD) but enough pixels for most :)

Thanks for answering. Well I know I can save a little choosing lower specs but I would especially know if in your opinion it's risky to buy a refurbished m4800. Any thoughts about this?

Don't really have any experience with refurbs, but you should still have a return window.

We have a few refurb towers at work that work fine, if that helps.

Has anyone upgraded their GPU to anything above the K2100m on the QHD config?

I have a "refurb" Thinkpad, from eBay. The best 500 bucks I ever saved, haha :)

I looked at refurb M4800 prices on eBay: there are some great deals. Were I to buy at this point I would definitely get a refurb M4800. After all: same warranty, but way cheaper; why not?

Since the M4800 uses the smaller size MXM 3.0 Type B module, I haven't seen anything higher on the market. The FirePro M5100 is arguably higher performance, but since Dell doesn't allow the FirePro + QHD as an option, I believe there would be some problems.

Technically, it's above QHD, it's QHD+. Thank the marketing departments who decided that 1280*720 was technically "HD", and that 1080p was "Full HD" or "FHD". It's not QFHD, but it is quadded up from 1600*900. My desktop "QHD" screen is 2560*1440, quadded up from 1280*720.

I'll definitively buy my first laptop on ebay. I have even found some new Dell's m4800 with the specs I want cheaper than in the canadian website.
My main concern now is about the quality of the m4800 FHD screen. I've read so bad reviews about it that I don't know anymore if I have to take the FHD or QHD screen.
I'm a 2D 3D artist and the image quality is very important for me. Softwares I use are not hdpi friendly and I really don't know how scaling will look in the QHD screen.
So FHD, QHD with scaling, QHD in 1920x1080? So difficult!
If someone from Montreal have a m4800 I'll be so happy to have a look on it! :)
