M4800 Owner's Thread

I just added the pictures I had above. The cable you listed is a little different then mine but I think it should work as I think the QHD+ & UHD panels use the same hardware other than the panel. One other thing that you will need is the cover or frame. If I am not mistaken the FHD panel mounts with tabs at the top and bottom while the QHD+ & UHD panels mount with tabs on the left and right. I thought I had a picture of that but don't. If you look them up on Panelook.com or eBay you should see what I mean.

 

Yes, thanks for more info! My M4800 came with an HD panel from 2016. It has screws on left and right sides. But you're right. FHD panel has screws on top and bottom.

So my M4800 can be upgraded to the latest spec: 4k screen. 4940MX CPU, 32GB HyperX 2133mHz RAMs, etc.
I will try this upgrade soon. I was almost giving up on 4k M4800 because 4k WNW0H motherboard sells for over $200. it used to be cheaper but not anymore.

My M4800 is getting quite old now, and the hinges are starting to wobble badly. Has anyone successfully tightened up the hinges on their M4800? I've already checked the screws in the display assembly and chassis, so the wobble is coming from the hinge mechanism.

 

I just outright replaced the hinges in my M6700 a couple of weeks ago. A new panel assembly (without the panel) with hinges was around $20.

 

I must say I am very pleased with my i7-4940MX cpu upgrade that I found for a bargain.
Bios is set to disable speedstep just as before, I did a cmos reset before swapping the cpu.
Thermal paste: Thermal Grizzly Hydronaut. Next purchase Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut due to low availability on Hydronaut.




The fan isn't even revving up and down like a jet engine that my second M4800 does with the 4900MQ.
I did the same thermal mods to it that I have in mine and it revs like a maniac opening a revit project.
Both have Delta cpu fans, but the other one has an AVC gpu fan but I have a Delta fan that will be put into it when I have time to replace it.
Its just as calm as it was with the i7-4700MQ and the idle temps are exactly the same at 49° C when writing this reply in Firefox and 47° C if I don't do anything to the computer ie true idle temp.

Now a while after ending the stress test, 44° C when writing this reply and 43° C in true idle.
This is impressive...what is this bulltalk about TDP will make the computer overheat that everyone is spamming all replies when someone asks if this cpu will work in their pc?!
It handles the temp even better than the i7-4700MQ

I also replaced the cpu heatsink with a new one because the old one had fins come off.
And it is very difficult to solder heatsink that is assembled as it will swell and in worst case scenario explode.
And heating up the tube is almost impossible unless you have a acetylene torch because the heat was instantly removed trying a normal butane heat gun so it was impossible to solder the fins that came off.
To prevent this from happening I used cyanoacrylate and an accelerate to bind everything together.
Both on the bottom, the top and between the heatpipes.
When manufactured they are soldered before the tubes are pressurized and sealed

The old heatsink assembly I broke off the aluminum brackets from and bent the pipes to interconnect both the cpu and gpu heatsink. But the assembly will happen another day, I don't have enough free time to do it today.
This will massively increase the thermal efficiency.
As I mentioned earlier I had my thoughts about soldering it together, or using TIM and enclose it with adhesive which I have done before. But settled on using Arctic Silver Thermal Adhesive.
This stuff is almost impossible to buy these days but is still used in assembly line in LED light manufacturing so I was able to order a set from UK.

 

Anyone try the 4980hq in these m4800?

I use one in my t440p and it's wonderful. I down clock to 2.0Ghz and set battery saver mode to get about 9 hours of life. Only because I sometimes leave the AC adapter at home while working.

Otherwise it's pretty nice, probably more apt for the latitudes that don't have the dpgu option.

 

Unfortunately latitude series uses bga cpu's since early xx30 generation when they changed chassis design to the design they use nowadays to keep things more slim.
If you're purchasing a latitude make sure you choose the cpu you want or you have to buy an entire motherboard, same as with ThinkPad and HP elitebook.
I think all ThinkPad models now uses BGA not only the slim models, socket design is a luxury of the past on laptops.

The cpu you mention is weirdly SKU'd lower down but has a higher average benchmark score but reviews mention due to higher TDP most stock systems perform worse due to overheating, but in my case this cpu might actually be better performing than the 4940MX.
Eh... hang on its a bga only chip, might explain why nobody has one for sale.
M4800 has a pga socket,... are yours mounted on a bga/pga adaptor?

 

Yep, otherwise I wouldn't have asked. I'm well aware the 4980hq traditionally comes in a bga package.

It's equipped with 128mb l4 cache. That alone makes it a better choice than the mx chips.

Sadly doesn't work in my ranger, but works just fine in my t440p.

 

I can't find any for sale and the original tabao ad is gone, only the lga ad is still up and listed.
Only one is out on ebay too and that is lga for 999usd.
Nothing on aliexpress.
Yes it would be interesting too find out if that would be possible but both the price and that I would have to contact the seller and make a special custom order kind of gives it away that it will be very expensive, compared to the gained performance against the 4940MX.
I recently modded my microserver G8 with a Intel Xeon E3-1270V2 and Scythe Kozuti along with a Evercool Titan Northbridge Chipset Cooler so I am kind of tired and need a rest from all technology...

 

4980hq is selling for $500 USD while 4940mx is under $300 now. I'm not sure if 4980hq will worth extra $200.
